CB360 Engine Mods

Hi Guys,

I realise I might annoy people by asking this, as I imagine it has been covered many times before. I am rebuilding a CB360 engine and I just want to make sure I get it right and don't miss anything. I have searched through the forum and general google search and have found a few things that need doing.

I found this one by CrazyPJ http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=43545.0
I also found some info on gundrilling the cam.

I have been through several builds, and have seen images (mainly drilling holes in the clutch carrier) but stuggling to find details of exactly what it does.

can anyone suggest what are the must do mods to the cb360 engine to get a nice reliable running engine. It will be running all stock internals.

Cheers in advance

If you wanna keep the engine ALL STOCK your talking oil mods Im guessing?

This will be some light reading for ya. Each link below is a different approach to oil system mod. Take your pick...I couldnt find the good pics of a drilled cam system. But might try a search.

If you want to add an external pump & cooler like Giant Robot did below might contact him or Kanticoy. I know theres a schematic for this system floating around but I couldnt find it.

If you are not racing around at 9200 RPM all day, watch the oil levels, change the oil regularly, don;t use silicone form-a-gasket, clean the oil filter regularly, the motors are quite reliable.

Most cam bearing failures are from abuse of some kind.

There was a change in the oil pickup, so that a low oil level and bike on the side stand wouldn't cause a loss of oil pressure, but they work other wise.

The only mod I would do, at least at first, is the oil transfer piece that rubs against the fromt of the oil filter. Opening it up will help oil flow.

the silicone stuff is because little bits break off and clog the oil feed to the cam....

don't rev the bike cold or immediately after starting...start the bike, let it idle a minute....Gets the oil up to the top and fills the little reservoirs up there.

Thanks Myd, only just seen this reply.

I dont plan on revving the crap out of the bike everywhere I go, but just dont want to be afraid of winding it open on occasion.

Opening up that piece I think I will definetly do. Looked at Crazypjs thread on the matter and looks fairly straight forward.

Cheers for the advice on pick up, Had a quick look just now on it an it seems the later CJ models have the updated pick up, just so happens when I bought the bike it came with a CJ engine as well which I was going to use for spares so will swap the pick ups over!

I have read a couple places about drilling out the cylinder head, some casting mark which can be drilled out to improve flow to the cams? I havent been able to find full details of exactly what needs drilling, anyone know any more on this?

CrazyPJ has a good mod on the oil transfer piece. Back in 1980, I added an oil cooler....It's visible in the early pics of my build. I have pics of the mods needed to run and external cooler, that also may be usful for an external filter. However, I have no idea where I could mount an external filter....

Thanks myd, will take a look through you build.

not sure Ill go as far as adding an external cooler, but always good to go through some inspirational threads
