cb360 fork seals stuck

Atleast I think so....Well hopefully the pictures will say it all. Im waiting on tires to be mounted so i decided to replace the seals while i wait.

So does this need to come out? If so it looks pretty beat up around there from the previous owner..there wasnt even a snap ring on it..

What are some tricks for this bad boy?

Yep it needs to come out. Buy a seal puller, you'll thank me later. Once you own one it becomes a must have tool.

The damage is minimal at this point. It takes some work to reall damage with a seal puller too but it can be done so be careful not to dig into the race when extracting the seal ring that was left behind.

P.S. cmon fess up we know you did it. hehe

Ah a 'seal puller' ? This sounds amazing im definitely on it.


Haha honestly i would almost feel better knowing i did that. I'm pretty sure the previous owner was in a rush or something. No c-clip and the bottom allen head bolt that holds the innards wasnt as tight as it should have been. :/

Use heat to expand fork leg and something under seal 'puller' to prevent damage
 
Some seals are seriously stuck in the fork leg. Very hard not to do damage to the soft and thin aluminum casting even with a seal puller if the seal is really stuck. Heating is extremely helpful, but not always the total solution. I take a die grinder and simply cut the seal. You do have to be very careful not to cut into the aluminum, but once the steel shell of the seal is cut in one spot, the seal will come right out no matter how stuck it is. Usually once the shell is razor thin all the way across in one spot, it is enough. If a seal seems hard at all to remove, I go straight to cutting it, and use a tire spoon and a rag to gently pry it out rather than take a chance of damaging the leg. Extremely fast, easy and works every time. Since you are replacing the seal anyway, you have nothing to lose except having to clean up the swarf from the grinding operation. If you do nick the aluminum where it has to seal against the OD of the seal, you can fix it with a dab of 3-bond or sealant of your choice.
