CB360 front disk brake upgrade? And Timing chain

tweakedlogic

Been Around the Block
My brakes are... inadequate. I need an upgrade. What will bolt on or nearly bolt on? I'm not scared to make stuff. But I want to keep my forks. I believe these brakes were used on many mid seventies Hondas. Better caliper and rotor is what I'm look'in for.

Also, I have been searching the web and boards for a new or (preferably) upgrade timing chain. I know they are different than the 350s. All I can find is a used. This is a cafe bike. It lives above 6000 RPM. I need a new and better chain before mine bores a hole in my case.

Thanks guys.

The mountings are on the fork to fit a Honda 'swinging arm caliper and stock CB360/CB350 disc wheel
It's not 'too' bad when set up properly and disc is de-glazed
As for cam chain, get Camillia from Z1 Enterprises for a CB350/750, (92 or 94 link, forget which?) new rivet link and cut it to fit 360 (remove 2 links I think?)
I did one a few weeks ago for a friend, posted pics somewhere?

Thanks for the info on the chain. Any ideas on a tensioner?

As for the stock brake. I ahve had nothing but trouble from this thing. The caliper and master cylinder has been rebuilt many times. No matter what I do the pads still drag a little and glaze the rotor. I drive the thing fast and my brakes do not inspire confidence in the turns. I want to be able to do stoppies if I need to. ( I won't)

Edit: I just read your 360 build. very nice. I may have questions for you later.

If it's properly adjusted it wont drag
You are setting clearance on 'fixed' pad at 0.006"?
The pivot is totally free moving?
What pads are you using?
Genuine Honda seem to work pretty good
I haven't been able to find Girling sintered pads for years, they were awesome
EBC organic don't glaze over too bad as long as you use brakes hard every now and then (but they do wear out pretty fast)
High metallic content (bronze wires in pad material) work real well but need hard braking and usually a 'warm up' or they will glaze over
Is your brake rotor 'blue' or mirror finish?
If 'blue' your using brakes hard enough to need better pads, if mirror finish, your not using front brake hard enough
BTW, theres a cam chain tensioner slipper on ebay, the front guide is a lot more difficult to find, I tend to buy them when I see them.

Rotor is a mirrored blue. I use my brakes hard a lot. I speed a lot too. so i need good brakes. they don't inspire me. I've ridden heavier single disk bikes that have a firmer feel and stop better without the noise when I'm NOT squeezing the lever. Unlike this 360. Maybe it just cursed.

I am running my second set of Honda pads. I haven't tried the EBC yet. I deglaze the rotor, or turn it about every 4-6 months. It's thin enough now that if I turn it again it will be too thin.

I have had trouble with the master cylinder leaking over and over. I would fix it, or replace it, then one day it would start leaking again. Same is true for the caliper ( though it hasn't leaked in some time)
I have rebuilt 3 master cylinders and 4 calipers. I have adjusted numerous times with each setup. It may work for a while, but eventually the brake will drag and squeal. At 70 MPH I can hear it over my pipes and wind!!! gong slow is unbelievably annoying. I've had shops and mechanics look at it. Old timers, new timers, engineers, anybody that might be able to offer help has been enlisted at one point or another.
My master cylinder started leaking again today after about 3 months since the last rebuild. I am fed up. If I can't fix these brakes and be done, I'm going to be done with the bike. Or I might swap on a GXSR front end. but i have better things to spend that kind money on at the moment.

I just rebuilt and set up my forks. They don't leak anymore and the ride is perfect. That's why I was hoping to find a better caliper that would bolt on.
With the clubman bars on there, I really need a new mater anyway. the feed hole is too shallow in the brake fluid. I'm looking at a GS400 unit. Then I'll have a stainless line made, but I want a better caliper. I'm not putting any more money into this brake set up. All of it has to change.

Sorry for the rant.

i wonder if the bleed hole is clogged in the mc, if it were, it may keep the caliper seal from pulling the piston back from the rotor. also... the term "rebuild" is very broad on this board, I'm assuming you meant you replaced all rubber components, including the caliper seal and scraped and cleaned the seal groove?

Something is wrong, my rotors are pretty blue but my brakes don't squeak or squeal.
Brendon had irritating bake squeal on his 360 for last several weeks.
the rubber 'o' rings in pivot were dry and rotor was glazed.
scuffed it up with some 240 grit emery, and carefully oiled the top and bottom pivot (literally a single spot) as we didn't (I didn't) have time to dismantle it
Did just over 30 miles today out in the 'lanes' finding some twisty bits, my brakes are crap as well
I'm going to try a smaller bore master cyl (11mm cos' I got one) and braided lines
Now it's only the super loud exhaust irritating me ;D (sounds good when I'm 50 yards in front ;) )
