I am trying to figure out how to disassemble the master cylinder and looked it up several times and supposively there is a snap ring to take out to get the inners out. I heard it was tricky to get out but I cant even see it. Has anyone ever done one of these? I am trying to snad blast it and get a rebuild kit. Thanks for any help, heres the pics

See the first pic? Thats the one where you'll find the snap ring. It's way down at the base of that plunger. If its badly corroded and dirty in there, you may have trouble seeing it, but it's in there. You'll need a long set of snap ring pliers to get it.

Oh cool, I will need to clean it to see it and see if my snap ring pilers will work, probably not. Thanks for the help I will post on my build thread if I get it out tomorrow. Thanks again.

You really need the extra long 90 degree circlip pliers.
They are about $10 at various places
I forget how much I paid for mine, bought new ones a few months ago
They were a lot cheaper than I expected
You probably have part of the dust boot still in there covering up the circlip
I'm pretty sure I posted pics of dismantled master cyl about 18 months ago?
if your going to sandblast it, do it before you strip it and make sure everything is sealed up tight. I would put a bolt into banjo end, fit cap and tape it up
I'll post the pics from photobucket
You have to fit secondary seal onto piston in position shown as it comes separately in rebuild kit

It makes sense to blast it before taking it apart. But I doubt my snap ring pilers will work so I will have to go pick some up. I will try auto parts stores and maybe hardware stores if I dont find it at auto part stores. Thanks for the very detailed description

Check in the 1-800-CAFE-HELP thread, I found a great video in the Technical Vid's Section.
By the way the circlip is easy with a shop pick, looks like a dental tool get em at home depot $7 a set.
The Snap ring at the bottom is a pain. I had to destroy the snap ring getting it out because it was rusted in place.
I ended up using the shop picks on that as well because the only snap ring pliers I could find that were long enough were $27 made by motion pro.
Used B12 chemtool to clean the inside of the unit and finished by installing the new kit.
Hasn't leaked since October 1st.
Now if I could just figure out the dang carb issue.

Thanks, I will definatly search for that. and my circlip was already out, good for me. I think I am going to buy some $20 90 degree snap ring pilers, i looked at almost every autp parts store and hardware and still nothing. It would be nice if my snap ring pilers were 1 inch longer and opened 1 inch wider so i could take my sproket off and on easy, but no. Thanks again, I wish I could help with your carb problem, not really there yet on my build. Good luck

Sorry to chime in but why not buy a new master cylinder..???.. The old ones tend to leak eventually..I think it is always better to up grade the brake system since we are talking of a 30 year old piece of equipment .. just a thought .. good luck..

True, actually never thought of it that much, and I drilled and polished my brake lever, maybe I can find one thats interchangble. Looking on ebay

I would just re-build it as you already have the kit.
If you do decide to swap master cyl, get a slightly smaller diameter piston (as low as 11mm bore)

Yea I will rebuild this one, but on my next build I want to get new brakes and suspension and make it handle crazy good. But for now this will do. :)
