CB360 Muffler Question

CJHusband

When in a hole, stop digging
I've reached the muffler stage of my build.
The bike is a 76 CB 360 frame, with a CJ360T engine. Runs well. Has good compression. Bit of a backfire on left side, but all that is to be fixed in the coming weeks.
The question for today is about mufflers.
The bike has the stock exhaust system on at the moment, but the current mufflers have been laid on, dented and scratched to hell and back.
I'd like to pretty the old girl up a little, get her some new jewels.
I know I don't want to run bare pipes, I need to keep the noise at a reasonable level. Not church quiet, not dick head loud.
I've been looking at shorty's, vintage replacements, and all manner of other options. I need to make sure that there is clearance for the rear sets, I don't have a ton of cash, and like the balance of pipes on either side.
What is the communities thinking?

Cheers,
Chris.

I can speak for the community when I say.... POST SOME PICS UP!!!! haha..

I can't speak for the shorties.. but I have heard the Cocktail Shaker style emgos on a Beemer and they sounded pretty cool.. There's also a company called Cone Engineering that makes some sweet pipes.. I'm about to order some of their reverse cones for my Beemer. They aren't too bad on price either.. Check this out (pdf) http://www.coneeng.com/pdf/motorcycle/MC%20finsihed%20Mufflers%20PDF.pdf

Just my thought, I really doubt that you would find a 360 to be too loud with straight pipes. I really thought my big bore 450 would be unbearable with 1.5" straights dumping in front of the rear tire, but the volume's just about right to me. I'm putting tips on and calling it good.

No way. Those 360s are ridiculous. There's a reason Kit calls his LoudBike. I can hear him when he's BEHIND me over my own. Replicas Spartan is the same.

It would be obnoxious if it wasn't so hilarious.....

If the originals are beat up, the 'nicest' mod I've seen is cut about 6"~8" off, remove the flanges, and make a reverse cone.
Looks a little like race exhaust as you have a 'correct' tapered up-sweep
I wish I hadn't tossed all the F.U silencers I had, I would be modifying the hell out of them (If anyone has removed stock CB360 silencers, I wouldn't mind getting a pair?)
shipping will probably be expensive but may be worth it?
I can swap for starter, spedo/ tach plugs and a carb re-build for pods/open pipes or cash (plus postage)

Sorry for the delay in response. It's been a busy weekend. I've got a few photos of the start of the project floating somewhere at home. I'll promise to get a thread going with the build as soon as I have a chance to get back into the build in a measurable way.

As for the exhaust. Ultimately I want to throw some rear sets on, using the stock muffler mount, probably something with a universal fit. Given that my current mufflers are what I believe to be stock, although, they have a big seam on top and bottom, sticks out about a 1/4 of an inch, so they may be after market if the honda originals didn't have that. I'm trying to keep this as bolt on as possible for now, while keeping in mind that there are some inevitable parts that'll need fabbing. I'm handy, but don't have the tools or experience to fab and weld in house. What do you guys recommend muffler wise? I don't mind a loud bike, but I'd like it to be neighborhood friendly loud.

What would suit those requirements? Clear rear sets, noise dampering, and still allow the bike to be rejetted, and tuned reasonably well.

Thanks again for your assistance, and I do promise to get a build thread going when I have a chance.

I like to use Thrush glasspacks. (about $40.00 new)
I don't think they are made smaller than 1.75" inlet so you'll need an adapter

I seem to remember seeing a post of yours about them a few months ago. Is this more or less what you're getting at? http://www.amazon.com/Thrush-24210-Glass-Pack-Muffler/dp/B00029J3KC

If that is an option, to use it as a slip on, aside from an adapter for size, can a split be put in to allow for a tightening band? Is that the general idea?

Also, what do you think of mufflers like this: http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-17-inch-reverse-cone-megaphone-muffler-80-84030.html ?

Is there any reason to steer well clear?

Cheers,
C.

The reverse cone look more 'period correct' but they ar substantially more expensive.
No reason to stay away from them, although I have no idea what they sound like (usually, cheaper baffled types are a bit tinny)Looks like cone is removable so it may be possible to get some packing in there to remove higher frequencies?

My new mufflers will be in tomorrow. (from that link I posted above)... I'll post a vid as soon as I get them on.

Cool, I quite like the look of them.
You will need to do 'something' to 360 pipes though as they will apper to point downwards without some sort of 'bent' extension (well, you don't HAVE to do anything, but, I would ;D )

PJ: I'll have to take a look at the headers and check that downwards angle you mentioned.
CafeMatty: That video is pretty sick!

I suppose the next step will be tuning for the new set up, pods/aftermarket exhaust. Excuse my inexperience, but from what I understand, the engine tuning will remain unchanged, but the carbs will require a bit of work. I've read a few posts by PJ and others saying that the jets need to be swapped out in some situations. How difficult is it going to be to get the bike running well? What jets should I start searching for?

As always, you guys are epically helpful!

I still have a bit of tuning to do, but I think these sound alright...

I'm running CB headers on my CJ. The mufflers are some reverse cones I picked up from DCC.
