cb360 rebuild transmission shifting doesnt feel right

Been Around the Block
another sad story. rebuilt cb360 with new rings. motor spins freely timed up camshaft and spark. Lost the master link so the chain is not attached at the moment to front sprocket. clutch cable is attached but thats it, no adjusting on it what so ever. its just attached to the inside of the sprocket cover on the clutch lever, spring, have not messed with the adjuster at all . so, here is where it gets to sucksville...maybe. i just wanted to go through the gears to see how it shifted and well, it does not feel right. you can hear a change from first to neutral and hit second, but it just doesnt feel right. feels mushy, not that the there was alot of spring on the gear change before hand, but, is that normal? is it because the clutch is not adjusted? Also, there is about 1 quart of 10-40 in it. added the quart to see for lubin. dont want to take apart to get to bottom case again so i figured i would ask before i dive back in.

I found with mine that moving the secondary shaft back and forth helped with engaging the next gear. To do this I just wiggled the drive sprocket back and forth until it allowed the shift engagement. I was chasing an issue for a while and then realised it was just that the alignment of the little pillars on the shift fork hub thingy with the kidney holes in the gear itself.

On another note, I had problems on my 250 engine where the entire shift drum was pushing the retaining bearing out of the side of the crankcase. So when you tried to shift, instead of the shift fork moving the engagement hub, it would actually move the entire shift drum in the opposite direction!
Was not happy when I found that someone had bolted the case halfs together without locating the bearing and subsequently punched the side of the case out where the locating key lives. Nothing a bit of jb weld couldnt fix... ended up swapping that engine out anyway but it did run ok with that bodgy fix...

If it still gives you grief then I would try freeing up the clutch.
