This is how my bike sits.

I need help with seat design and construction. I'd like it to look similar to this.

I need help with the following:
1. What's the best way to attach the pan to the frame and still be able to access the battery.
2. Recommended Materials for pan, foam, and vinyl as well as any type of fasteners for mounting pan to frame and/or attaching material to pan.

Any Suggestions?

This isn't the best example as it was my first go at fiberglass, but this is what I did..

Basically laid the glass, and then drill holes through the seat that lined up with that cross-member.. then ran to bolts through it and glassed it in.. I secured it with these little wingnut type knobs from Lowes (Hillman Bar Knobs)

Excellent foam knowledge here. Should be foamfordummies.com. Great source. Many thanks.

I see. That's probably what I'll do. Only, I may JB weld or just have someone weld my bolts. Does the seat pivot or wiggle at all with the bolts being only in the middle or at one end?

Thanks Matty, I've got a bit to do still, but I'm off to a good start I think.

Check out the first few pages of my build thread below. My seat is similar to what you are looking for. 16g steal for the pan, welded nuts to the pan and ended up using threaded studs and existing holes in frame to mount it.

It fit well.. I've since changed that setup.. Now I don't even have it fastened down, as it has side bits that come over the sides of the frame.. It's such a snug fit it doesn't move.. and when you're sitting on it, forget about it.. In your case it would be a little different since you seat style is different... but yeah.. I think using the cross-member as a mount point is your best bet.

This seat set up is exactly what I had in my mind's eye? Probably because i saw your build back when I first joined. Glad you stopped by to refresh my memory. Great Build btw. Your very first pic looks exactly like the cover to the clymer manual. Love what you did with it.

Here's a seat pan I just made up at work I had a template kicking around from my 360. It's a decent base to start. All you would have to do is cut the rear of the frame a bit for it to sit nice. Cut out some 1/2" MDF, foam on top, wrap in vinyl stapling it to the mdf. Then some self tapping screws through the sheet metal into the wood and bingo your in business. From there I think I would weld on a hinge to the frame and attach to the metal seat pan.

When cutting the sheet metal to create my pan, where should the outer edge line up? Do I need to set it in from the outer edge of the frame a bit to allow for the thickness of the upholstery? Or do I want the sheet metal to be flush with the outer edge of the frame?

I cut the edge of my pan to the center of the frame tubes. With padding and everything it now lines up with outside of frame.

Transition from seat to tank looks like it may be tricky. Do I bend the pan up on top of the tank rubber (i left adequate length on the sheet to do so). Or do I just keep the end of the sheet metal at frame level?

It depends on what you are going to do for upholstery. If you are going to have barely anything then I would bend the metal up to meet the tank. If you have upholstery that will cover the back end of the tank then I wouldn't worry about bending it up. Its really whatever you want it to look like.

I will have to take some better pics of the setup on my build, but I shaved down original tank mount and I am going to hard mount it to the frame. I cleaned up the pinch weld on the frame so it's flat and I am putting a threaded insert in for the tank to bolt to. In between the tank and the frame will be a rubber bushing. Still have to clean what's left of the rear tank mount.

I can get a better pic when I get the insert in and the tank completely mounted.

so after you hard mounted the tank to frame, did you run into any clearance issues with the tank against the motor?

Still in the works, but the rear of the tank is going to be lifted off the frame with the rubber spacer that the bolt runs through to keep it at stock height.

And is this all in an effort to allow the seat pan to butt up smooth with the tank?

Nice build. I'm diggin the stance. Keeping the green?

Yeah plan is to butt it up against the tank, wanted to avoid the whole making it fit over the stock mount and stay flush to the frame issue. Thanks for the compliment, definitely staying green.

I cleaned up the seam and welded in a threaded insert to mount the tank to. I need to get a rubber bushing/spacer that the bolt will run through and space out the tank and frame.
