CB360 Whatchmacallit

Oh I thought the KA was ?teflon? What's that white stuff? I've seen bikes with gears and stuff made out of it too whatever it is. Might be an interesting thread. Peope can submit ideas for designs and materials for a new 360 chain tensioner. TECAST eh?

The white stuff on the 350 tensioner sprockets is probably a polyamide. A 6PA derivative, probably. I'd go with 6PAM if I were to make one.

Well, no parts fundage this week so decided to strip the tank

came out pretty nice, really was expecting some bondo but really like the natural steel finish and don't even mind the few small dents she has

The PO used some kind of flat black on it that is very difficult to remove, not sure what it is but it took 3 good coates of stripper to remove.

It was probably car paint. It's thick and a pain in the ass to remove so I hear. Had someone use it on a door once we tried to strip. Right about now I'd be thinking of powdercoating that tank a transparent color if there aren't dents to be filled and it's shiny.

Tossing around some other ideas with the tank, probably gonna clear it but working on some other ideas. I was really surprised on how it came out, was expecting a mess under the black paint.

Yeah, I think my tank was painted with some sort of car paint as it was a bee-otch to get off with stripper. Also, I noticed the tank decals (like the two tone on 350fs) was much thicker and difficult to remove.

I will gave to agree and say clear the tank if its in nice shape. I once saw some chick go to town with a Sharpie on a bare tank and then cleared over it (Do a google image search for "Sharpie Ducati"). If you know a laid back tattoo artist I'm sure they could whip you up something cool.. just an idea..

Looked up the sharpie bike, very cool but not something for me, really interesting bike though.
It has a few dings but I want it to retain some of its age for the look I think I am going for. Wish I had the skills to make or the money to buy an alloy tail.

Yeah, that Sharpie bike is a little crowded to say the least. An alloy tank would be cool. I wonder how much it would cost to get your tank chromed? << Then again that wouldnt show age..

I wonder if waxing it would keep away the rust? I rubbed some metal polish on it the other day and its been under my carport. Not exactly out in the weather but Florida this time of year is crazy humid, havent seen any flash rust or anything started yet.

If you do a quick search on this site you will find that you share the same thoughts as many others. Waxing the tank is indeed a way to keep it from rusting. ALthough, I imagine that the wax may get on your clothes, gloves, jacket, etc. Also, you would most likely have to maintain a layer of wax at all times.

I like the dents also it gives it character. Have you thought about just clearing over the raw metal?

Thats exactly what I am thinking mnraider, I put a quick coat of wax on it to see how it would fair. Been under my humid, Florida carport for a week and no sign of rust so either will keep a coat of wax or clear.

If you don't seal it first you could powdercoat it in clear. Would be very durable and less prone to rust or yellowing. Seal it after it's coated. I made the mistake of POR and then baking the paint. lol. Retarded me burned the inside of the tank and had to acid inside and recoat.

I have never used POR for sealing a tank, always used Kreem. After doing some looking around POR seems to be a much better choice, I have noticed flaking from Kreem but never anything major, POR just seems a better product.

But, yeah, gonna save sealing the tank till everything else is pretty much done. I like the clear powder coating just dont have anywhere local to powder coat, I have a friend that can do parts at his job but nothing fancy, just basic colors. I think black, blue, and white. Its a screen door factory he works at so pretty plain colors.

Oh, I actually used gas tank sealer from Eastwood. I think it's close to same thing. We'll see. I got my powdercoat system from them for about $250? Bought a cheap household oven and put it in the basement. I powder coat all my own stuff now. I highly recommend it especially in your case. Not as nice as professional but good enough for me and I'll be saving thousands doing 11 bikes.

I have thought about that and will eventually probably get it. Just bought a house and trying to get back to having spending money, lol, reason why parts are coming in slow for this project.

Talking sealers, I used the kbs cycle tank kit, it worked fantastic. Comes with a cleaner a rust remover and a sealer. I will use them again for sure

Never heard of the KBS sealer fatherjon, did a good bit of reading on the POR15, seems a good choice aswell. Kreem has never caused me problems in the past but in a zx750 I had it in every once in a while I would see a sliver floating around in the tank of it but it was in there about 6 yrs.
