CB400 Operating Temp?

Been Around the Block
Hey guys, I have my 1978 CB400 Hawk TII on shakedown runs after doing maintenance to get her safe to ride (new tires, fork seals, plugs, bleed brakes, etc.) and I noticed it seems the engine just gets cooking hot. I realize this is an old air cooled engine, however it just stinks of burning oldness when I shut her down. I checked the plug color and they appear to be light tan/gray and there is plenty of fresh oil in the engine. I'm still troubleshooting some running issues (hesitation on acceleration), however, I would love some thoughts on the issue. I've tried the search function with no real good returns.

Thanks!

Brian

Is crankcase hot enough to boil water? (spit on it)
Clutch cover same.
Should run around 190~ 220deg F but head temps will be higher and area's of case will be cooler
If intake side of head is around 240 or less, everything is normal (exhaust side can be around 350~400, even when running right)
you'll probably need a 15~20mile run to get everything up to temp

Good info Crazy. Mine should be up and running for shakedown by the middle of the week. I'll let you know where my temps are at Box.

I wouldn't bother, just ride it and spend the money on gas
If it ISN'T too hot to touch, it's too cold ;D
