CB400n cafe build - Uni Student - Australia

hi guys I've been pretty busy with exams and assignments/moving house so not much has happened to the bike. tried to head stock bearings and just my luck they don't fit. So I have to get them replaced which will take some time. To make up for not working on my bike I went to a classic motorcycle swap meet this morning - got some pretty cool pics. didnt buy anything as it was mostly brit stuff. I'll post the pics in a bit.

charger - yes my clipons are 33mm. its a pretty fun project so far - with adequate parts around!

turns out the taper bearings did fit after all - rubber seal at the bottom of the shaft just had to be removed.

would anyone know where to get hold of an intake manifold for the bike? I'm guessing the 250n/t and 400t ones would be interchangeable with it.

ordering the gauges from dime city cycles - not sure if i should just go for the speedometer - that would look pretty cool.

found a hydroblaster nearby so im going to drop the rocker cover/side covers off there. looking out for some bellmouth intakes - like the old short trumpets they run on old tritons or brit bikes. finally moving ahead a bit! uni exams finish soon then ill be able to finish the seat and tank.

pics from the swap meet.

I was looking at velocity stacks earlier this week, but I decided not to go them. Going with just a pod filter for now, I'm not familiar with jetting to work it out on my own yet. Have you got any readings on jetting you're looking at? Sounds like its coming along.

And yeh, Southern Cross Uni. But don't have to go up there much anymore.

yep i am still thinking about going with the pod filters. not sure about jetting - i need to get the tank finished - the engine hydrablasted and a few other things first.

anyone here tried hydrablasting? I spoke to some guy at the swap meet about it and it sounds pretty good - for $120 or so he can do my engine - although i was thinking about only getting the side covers and rocker cover done.

any ideas? Im going up the the coast next week to work on the bike/play a gig. hopefully ill get a bit done.

I'm not sure what hydra blasting is compared to wet blasting, but I got my head and barrels wet blasted here:

The good thing about this process (other than the awesome results) is that it's non-abrasive, meaning no clearances are affected, so getting the head done was safe.

those results are awesome pete! im pretty sure its the same process - getting the bits done on saturday. Your bike is looking amazing by the way - nice progress!! love those pipes - im pretty keen to get some cl350 ones (kind of like yours).

Assembled the headstock last night - bottom bearing needed heaps of pressure but finally went on. Next tuesday i can get a quote to upholster the seat through a mutual friend so i really need to get moving in that front! i need to do a compression test - dont have a tester but ill get one off a mate. finally moving along!!!

ill post pics in a few days - got a new camera and the high quality images come out in raw data files so i need my computer to "develop" them

my plan is to weld some side panels on to the existing seat pan (which i have hacked to bits - rather smaller than when i started) and upholster the entire thing - so there will still be a slight rise in the rear but not a full on seat cowl.

Yeah I'm real happy with how it turned out! The only downside was the price because the Japanese alloy is a lot harder than the European stuff, so it took him a while longer... but I reckon it was worth it. Regretting not getting the whole motor done actually!

Good luck with the seat! Mine's off getting covered right now after doing all the foam myself...

I think you guys are stressing over the whole rta thing, I know that qld transport are much stricter, but it wouldn't vary much..

As for cutting your frame - adding a loop to the rear will pass without engineering. This is because the part you are cutting off is not structural, you are not changing any dimension by adding the loop.
They are not so much strict on cutting things off the bike.

The rear seat cowl if extended far enough to the rear will also act as a mudguard, as long as it goes the the furthest part of the rear wheel.

The front Guard is a bit of a tricky situation, it has to cover the area of tyre from 12-3 o'clock or vertically up and directly east from the axel, however your frame will technically cover from around 2ish-3, this will all come down to who does your inspection so you should take the time to go down (don't call) and talk to them so your on the same page... It's also sometimes a good idea to get your mechanic to do some work on the bike e.g my mechanic will be doing my final wiring (mostly because I hate wiring, but also because it makes them feel like they know the bike.

My mechanic also told me as a rule of thumb, obviously apart from the frame loop, make everything possible a bolt on piece, that way it's easy to remove or change if needed.

All in all it's all gonna come down to who you get to do the inspection, if they are a relaxed mechanic who is into bikes, they will let alot of it go, just make it all neat and make sure the loop is welded neatly and looks to be almost one peice like it was factory, chances are they won't even bother lifting the seat off to see it anyway...

Hope this helps (I started to ramble a bit in there, if you wanna chat about it any further feel free to PM me :)

Cheers
Ryanh

Hi interested how you are progressing with this build, what stage are you at ?

Just headed down the same track myself (81 CB400N). Plan so far (due to the previously mentioned queensland traffic regs :() is to get it registered first and then take to it with a grinder.

Keen to see how your going

So it has been a little while.. (to say the least!) but I have finally found the drive to finish this bike! Got my degree done and dusted and finally have the time/money to really give this thing a good shot. I got stuck on the seat (and the awful frame) but I have a metal fabricator mate who has now built a seat and cowl - engine is finished, painted and in the frame. Went through my list of parts needed and went on a spending spree - parts have been arriving and things are back on track! Planning to get the seat/cowl and tank painted in a medium gloss black - should contrast nicely with the chrome bits. Next up is getting the controls/battery/wiring loom/electronics added and rebuilding the carbies!

Low quality iPhone shot included... I should probably start a new build thread... and finish it this time!

Cheers,
Job
