CB400T2... Off the Back Burner

Swapmeet Louie

Put some metal in yer eye....
Well, where to begin?
I built the SPEEDHEAP for my brother last winter (was a gift, kind of a thank you for not only being a good brother, but, also being my best friend). And he came up to Boise to pick it up last 4th of July (from H.B. Cal.). After getting it home and riding it a bit, one of his buddies decided he wanted he wanted one too.
So, I get a phone call from this guy Doug. Who proceeds to tell me that he wants me to build him a bike. Totally flattered and amazed by his excitement, I told him I would look for a donor bike. And when I found one, I'd give him a call and we could work out the details.
Another friend of mine asked me if I could wire his R5 in trade for a complete and titled cb400. I thought, Shit! this is to good to be true... So I wire his bike. And he delivers This..... Minus the headlight, Seat, rear fender, and all the electronics. oh, and a motor that is blown. Funny all the little details people seem to forget to include when they are trying to get you to do something.

Anyway, this is it after I scrounged up the items listed above:

So fist thing was 1st.... Comstars Suck! they had to go! Especially the rattle canned "flat black" ones this one had. After a little measuring I found that a Suzuki gt550 frontend was a direct bolt on. And I had one. So I cleaned it up, drilled the rotor etc. This fuckers gonna stop! I also will be using the gt550 rear wheel. Which has a huge drum. this is the front end:

Next I needed to figure out what I was going to do for a tank. So, after looking @ the oh so common "tripple" back bone, and thinking "I'm Fuct". I decided to try and give the stock Hawk tank some style. So I fit some tank/knee pads to it. I did a tech on building the mounts for the pads in the tank and seat section. Anyway, I ended up with this:

Next... Was to drill speed holes in everything possible as usual, haha
Example A:

Been doing body work. So there has been little work done fab'ing or customizing as of late.
But this is how it sits right now. In primer...

28 people cant find anything wrong.

It looks good. I'm just waiting for parts to come in myself and figure out what to do about a bad cylinder case.

Re: CB400T2... polishing a turd 101

It's starting to look great - what knee pads are those?

Fine, it looks good. there, you happy? Looks good though for real. I like the speed holes. Do it up

Re: CB400T2... polishing a turd 101

Slick, man. Looks much better already.

Re: CB400T2... polishing a turd 101

are you fitting brake in front or behind fork?
I see you tried both

Re: CB400T2... polishing a turd 101

spokes rule ;)

Is that tank bare metal or painted silver? Looks pretty straight if it's stripped.

cool

Good eye Pj... I'm going to run it in front of the fork. Thats the way it came from the factory on the GT550. And also I wont need to run the brake line across the forks.

This bike is going to be very mild. More of a, dare I say "traditional" cafe. I want everything to be subtle. The fella Im building the bike for wants something kinda "retro", to use his words.

This is the bike I built my Brother. The end result will be something similar to this. Major difference being the 1" rise bars (instead of clubmans), and the disc front end.

Bikeboy, the tins in the first few pics were mare metal. believe it or not, I found about 10+ quarter size dings in it. The tank is in primer now. I plan on getting into paint next week.

Nice to find someone who isn't scared away by the frame and can see potential. I am doing a CM400 "Frankenfe" also. but dumped the CM tank for the CB tank.

Great designs and mods so far. looking forward to more.

Re: CB400T2... polishing a turd 101

Already leaps and bounds better looking. And you're a hell of a brother.

Re: CB400T2... polishing a turd 101

Nice work Louie. Love the drilled out covers.
P.S. Still got the comstars and would u part with them? I need a pair for my next project.

Re: CB400T2... new pics

Some of our snow melted finally... So I got a chance to role it out side and get a few better pics.

Got the braided brake line in. And put a pedestrian slicer on it which I'm really digging. The inset on it came white, which I'll be painting black.

Anyway, Thanks for looking

All I can say is Keep It Up! Looking great.

What can you tell me about the Front Fender? Mounts on Forks?, Mounts to Fender? Are they the only support? I like vintage look with the the supports I was thinking about similar but running over the fender like you on your Bro's Bike.

And What Boots did you use on the forks?

And What Size Tires did you squeeze on the Rims, I recently picked up a 100/90 Front and a 110/90 Rear and not sure about the look / fit on the rims and are your rims the original width?.

Thanks for the compliment!

The fender is a 63' Triumph fender on the 400. On my brothers 350, it's just the stock fender. And the boots are the oem that came on the gt550 front end.

I like the look of the supports wrapping over the original fender as on your brothers and like on my '71 CB750 ....."Vintage"

Did you drill and tap the lower forks to accept the supports?

AND the Holes in the side cover and peg supports is crazy. may have to pay you the ultimate compliment and copy!
