cb450 carb problems

Anyone want to figure this one out? I went for a ride yesterday, everything was acting fine until I had to stop and turn around on a dirt rode. It died on me, and when I started it, it wouldn't idle at all, so I had to keep high rpm's all the way home. When I got there, I took apart my left carb thinking the vacuum piston was sticking again. I cleaned it up a little bit, put it back together and started the bike. When I got it going, the rpm's kept climbing and wouldn't stop. I shut it down, checked the throttle cable, then tried again and did the same thing. Killed it, didn't even know where to begin to start fixing the problem. This is my first motorcycle build, this problems over my head

Check for hairline cracks in the rubber carb intakes.
I had that same problem on my SR500. I found cracks that would open up due to vibrations
I put new ones on and the problems disappeared..

I'll check them out, thanks man

To check them get the bike running and spray some starting fluid at them. If your idle changes them you have cracks or they aren't sealing well.

I like your idea, but it won't idle. That's the thing. As soon as I start the bike, it goes into some sort of redline banshee-scream mode and I have to kill it

If its revving to redline right away then it sounds like the slides are stuck open. I know you said you've had the carbs apart a few times, but those slides cant stick AT ALL! I spent almost an hour per side on my bike with some fine emery cloth and steel wool. They must slide very easily.
I hope you get it sorted.

Finally, some useful information. I appreciate that. I'll go check that out right now

And I like that blue 71 you did btw. Very nice
