Hey all;

So I bought a cb450 a few years ago with the intention to get it back on the road. I am finally getting around to doing some work on it.

However; on the engine case just above the chain and front sprocket the vin number and piece of the case has been broken off.........

Beyond holding the VIN for the engine and providing a means to stop any of the crap from the chain flying around does this serve any real purpose?

I am contemplating just filling away the jaged crap and making a then making some sort of mesh guard down the line....

I dont have a pic on me of my broken case, but here is where I am talking about the break being

9451458367

Technically that is the motor serial number, the Vin is on the steering neck...On Honda's, the Vin and Motor serial number rarely match....

In NY, if you were stopped, they might look at you suspiciously having the serial number conveniently missing.....In NY, they impound motorcycles they deem stolen, and "altered serial number" is probable cause for them. You may want to keep the broken piece with the bike...Also, parts over the years changed for the Honda's of that era. The only clear ID for a part is the motor serial number.

I suggest you stamp the number nearby, so it is never lost....

You will need to replace the upper case if you want it to be "whole" again. But as long as there are no cracks in the rest of the case, you should be o.k.

Yea, no cracks or nothing just some open space.

Over here in washington they only car about the VIN on the frame itself so it shouldnt be a big deal for me. You never know though now do ya?

thanks for the comment
