CB450 Disc to drum conversion question

Yeah, I know, discs are better. I'm still putting a drum on and hopefully with some help from a local company getting better stoppage than my stock disc. I was already wanting to, but was uber-inspired by an amazing cb450 race bike at Western Cycle that's running drums and winning fricking everything it enters. So.....

cb450 forks have springs inside of fork tube.
cl450 forks have springs outside of fork tube.
cb450 has mounts for disc brakes.
cl450 has mounts for drum brakes.

The only difference I'm noticing is that the bar that goes from the drum to the fork to keep it from turning with the wheel is held on by a bolt that looks significantly larger in diameter than the hole in that same spot on my cb450. Would it be feasible to just run the smaller bolt with a washer in that location? I really don't want to swap out to the cl forks because of aforementioned reasons and because they seem shot (maybe a change in fork oil would help them but who knows?

I guess the real question here is how much actual stress is put on that bolt during braking and whether or not a smaller bolt (possibly purchasing something made out of a stronger grade) would be able to handle that stress.

Thanks again for your input...

Ya know I don't think I'd want to switch to a smaller bolt for the brake strap. Thats the only thing holding that brake assy from spinning. I don't like the idea of a smaller bolt with less shear strength. Add to that relining the brake shoes with a compound stickier than the original stuff. It could be a bad situation.
