CB450 Piston Compatibility

reesea17

I'm probably gonna ask a lot of questions...
I have a 1972 Honda CB450 and am looking for new pistons. I found a guy selling a set of cylinders and pistons from (what he believes year wise) is a 1974 Honda CL450. They look compatible to me but I know there are some differences between the CB and CL models. Question is, Would these pistons/cylinders work for my bike? Link to post below. Thanks for the help.

I guess the first question I would ask is, why are you looking for new pistons?, secondly how are your cylinder walls (within std. tolerances or in need of machining)?

I'm looking for new pistons because my left piston currently has a burnt hole in the top of it and it caused a little bit of gouging to the cylinder wall. They were already bored out to .25mm and because of some pretty good scoring I'd assume have to be bored out to .5mm and then I'd have to either find another .25mm piston and then get the bigger rings or find .5mm pistons and ring. Mind you I am still very new to all this so I could be off. But I figure with the Labor it would cost to have my cylinders bored out and the cost to find one or two more pistons would be astronomical compared to this deal for a new set of jugs that have already been bored out, and a set of what look like nice pistons at .75mm with rings for $175..

Heres my current pistons and sleeves just for show.

You need to start your search with the part number all the time I find. Those pistons are spec'ed for your bike, but what is the mileage of both bikes? Can you or he confirm that? Why is that bike being parted out?

Below is a recent quote i got from Ohio Cycle for new 1st over pistons, pins, clips and rings. 175 for used pistons seems steep.

Part Number: 13102-292-030, piston, Quantity: 2 we have two $89.99 each
Part Number: 13021-292-000, ring set, Quantity: 1 not sure if these are sold in a pack for all the pistons or just one $155.99
Part Number: 13111-283-000, pin, Quantity: 2 only have one $19.99
Part Number: 13115-283-000, clip, Quantity: 4 have plenty $1.00 each

I'll have to look into that as well. The mileage from my bike is 15,800 on the speedometer, but I cannot confirm if thats completely accurate and I have no idea how many miles were on the bikes parts in question. Where would I go about finding the part numbers for mine?

Those answers lend me to making this suggestion, check out the 1.0 over pistons available through Charlie's place. Yeah they are expensive but well worth the money if you value your time and have a timeline on the project. I tried searching for .50 overs and found limited results and at that I wasn't sure that my cylinders could be brought to spec for that size. Not wanting to risk, nor wanting to have them test bored first I opted for the 1.0 overs. Just my opinion, I am sure others will chime in.

Zero use in ordering any pistons until you know the condition of the cylinders.
Even less use paying an arm and a leg for used pistons that might not be any better then yours now, yes no hole but that's not the only thing to look for.
Aftermarket pistons are around from time to time. The pistons are NLA from Honda at the moment, no idea when another batch will be made. Find a dealer that deals in old parts. A
So search out the Honda twins forum for help.
