cb450 seat pan on a cb500t???

No, not without a bot of work. Keep the 500T seat, it's a nice shape. Pull the upholstery and sculpt the foam with an electric carving knife and have it re-skinned. It'll be way more unique that way...

i would do this but i'm still at the stage where i don't want to do anything to my bike that can't be undone. i think it's worth more in it's original condition if i decide to sell it. but at the same time, i bought this bike for the specific purpose of making a cafe racer out of it. i'm still hesitant to take the tank off and sand and paint it to the colors i want. someone PLEASE change my mind!!

Unfortunately, the 500T has been orphaned as a bastard child of the 450 line. It's too bad for any collector value, but good for guys like you and I who are modifying them. There's not a lot of value assigned to them so hack away. If you're really worried about it there are lots of parts available on ebay etc....including seats.

Hack hack HACK!!!

and get a cb 450 higher compression head. install it and pick up some horsepower easily.

Well, I wouldn't recommend that, sorry Brian.

It's not the head that yields the compression but rather the result of the crank, rod and piston which has a 2mm lower wrist pin in relation to the ring lands. As well, the 500 head seems to be well regarded as a better option for building a performance engine as it's ports are somewhat better designed and the combustion chamber is nicer. I've yet to see the two side by side but this is what I've gathered from talking to several builders about my own project. If there's definitive info out there somewhere I'd love to see it.

I do know the cams from a 450 make more power and are a cheap way to boost a little though you do need more compression to take advantage of them. My first 500T motor (cheap-assed ebay piston holed out on me) was built using a pair of 73mm ebay pistons for the 450 and a 1.5mm shim under the barrels to make up for the difference of wrist pin location. This yielded a 9.8-1 compression ration. I ran a set of nos cams from a 450K1 in a mildly ported head. I wish I'd upgraded the rest a little better as I'm sure the questionable stock ignition and poorly setup carbs are what killed it. I had a 2 into 1 exh. with no muffler and cheap pods on the stock carbs. It ran well up til the point it squeaked and died. depending on how fresh your cam chain is, you may need to shim the tension adjuster out at it's base to allow the chain enough slack to go back on.
