CB450 Voltage at idle question.

On my 72 CB450 I am getting 12.3V dc at the terminals at idle with a brand new ricks rec/reg. I tested the volts that the alternator/stator is putting out and on my green wire "i dont know why mine is green every diagram is pink" I am getting 12+V ac. On my yellow and white I am getting roughly 3v ac. This test was done with the alternator/stator disconnected from the rec/reg. From what I can tell I need to get a new alternator/stator, correct?
 
Did a ohm test from the yellow and white to the common"which in my case is green, maybe it use to be pink 40 years ago". Results were bad with inital reading being a 1.5 on both wires and rapidly dropping to 0.000 within 2 seconds. Should I bother with any more tests?

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.


Doesn't matter if it is though because the testing procedure is not measured at idle. Refer to the manual.
 
GOOD 450s will barely charge the battery at idle with the lights off. Lights running you need to get over 3k before you are making headway. Just a nature of the beast with the older Honda twins and their charging systems, make sure all your connections are spotless and if you suspect a bad wire replace it. Stuff is over 30 years old after all.

Pay attention to running voltages as well, anything over 14-15 might eat that agm battery.

When I get my stator back I will do a test at 3k rpm. It did fail a ohm test though so I am sure it needs attention.

I replaced all the electrical on the bike except for the stator. Headlight was disconnected. My goal is to run a lithium battery in this bike if I can get it to maintain 13.1v at idle which from what I have read a lot all over the place is not impossible.

13V at idle from your bike will be difficult if not impossible.

A Rick's Hot Shot system will help.
 
FWIW, I took both coils in my stator and connected them both together at the stator eliminating the second circuit that goes to the headlight switch and back. The output is run right into a regulator/rectifier unit and then right into the battery, all brand new wiring. She will idle at 12.5-12.8 volts depending on temperature and when it was last ran. I never see 14+ until I run the throttle up.

I did replace the coils with newer units, that could have something to do with it as at idle the only thing using juice on my bike is the coils. My 450 I usually have no issues with the battery, my 360 however does require more babying.

I have toyed with the idea of gutting one of the spare stators I have and rewinding it with a singe run and see what it will do.
