CB450K6 Build - (1st Bike Build)

Perdition

I just wanna go fast!
Hi guys. I've really enjoyed getting to know some of you (and your bikes) since joining the forum and now it's finally time for me to start my own build thread.

A little history on the bike. My 1973 CB450 originally belonged to my Uncle Jeff and was given to me recently as a gift. (Awesome, huh? :) ) Years ago, Uncle Jeff drove the bike until he wrecked it and was hurt. My Uncle Greg, his brother, then tried to sell the bike for him. He had a buyer but after a couple weeks the buyer decided having a bike was not for him and gave it back to my uncles. The bike then sat in my grandmother's barn/garage for the next 25 years. The garage leaked and the elements were not kind to the bike. The last time she ran (until recently ;) ) was 1986. My Dad and I are making this bike our little project. (He has a 74 450 but that's another story) She's not much to look at but by the time we're done she'll look and perform better than new.

Here's some pictures my dad took with his P&S when we first got her home and started working on the bike:

As you can see she's pretty rusty. We've replaced the battery, points and spark plugs and rebuilt the carburetors. After doing this, she started right up on the first kick after 25 years!! As you can see the tank is in bad shape so right now we have her running on an old lawnmower gas tank. ;D

The engine makes good compression and the past couple nights Dad and I have been working on the timing of the bike so she'll run just right. More pictures from my DSLR and updates to come. We've got quite a few boxes from eBay laying around and big plans for the bike. Stay tuned!

Re: Perdition's CB450 Build

Wow, that shows the quality of a Honda. Sits 25 years, rusts to sh!t and still has compression and runs. Clean here up and ride the crap out of her. The Before and After of this bike should be impressive.

Cheers

Thanks! I hope so. :)

Small Update: We finished the timing but haven't had a chance to take her around the block. I also went ahead and removed the mirrors and highway pegs as well as the passenger footpegs.

OMG. You have way more balls then me.. I don't think I could ever tackle something like that. I would get her running and Boom Rat Rod.

hahaha thanks. At first I thought she was a lost cause but the motor still turned over. I just hated to abandon her especially after seeing some of the transformations on this forum. This is my first bike build so we'll see how things turn out. :) By the way, love your bike. That orange rocks!

Re: Perdition's CB450 Build

That is some serious iron cancer man, but glad to hear the engine is solid (from first impression anyway). That's always a good starting point. This should be an interesting build. That and the fact that your dad is working on it with you, I don't see you ever getting rid of this bike.

Re: Perdition's CB450 Build

someone is in need of a soda blaster and a sand blaster!! wow that's a lot of rust!

Re: Perdition's CB450 Build

I still think that the CB450 is one of the best looking motors Honda ever produced.

Fantastic that you and your pops are building this together, man. Keep us updated on the transformation.

I see a lot of replacement bits in your future, ha.

Re: Perdition's CB450 Build

Update: One of the issues we've been having is the bike won't go into gear. So we embarked on our journey to get the crankcase cover off to inspect the clutch.

First, we had to get the drain plug on the bottom of the motor loose to drain the oil. I don't think it had been off for at least 25 years. Over the course of my bike's life it lost it's center stand. In order to get the proper clearance and leverage we ended up taking the exhaust pipes off. We got the rear brake linkage loosened up, and removed the kickstart and foot peg.

Then the real fun started: trying to get the screws out of the crank case. They were rusted (go figure!) and in pretty bad shape. We broke our impact driver bit trying to get them out. Dad picked up a new one from Sears and after quite a big of elbow grease and liquid wrench we got the screws out.

Looking under the cover it was nice to see something that actually looked "new" on this bike. I figured we would go ahead and give the clutch an overhaul while we we had everything off. Got these in the mail from Dime City (thanks guys!!) to address our clutch and replace our leaky carburetor gasket. We've also got a set of stainless bolts on the way from eBay. A couple other goodies showed up last week from eBay but more on those later... ;)

Thank you for all the kind words. Stay tuned. :)

Yogi, I've been busy with school/away from the bike but fortunately that will all change soon. In the meantime, I've just been accumulating parts and coming up with new concepts for the direction of the bike. Dad and I have her back together with a new clutch cable and clutch and a sealed CB450 tank we had picked up off eBay. We also currently have some chopped CL450 pipes on her but the tank and exhaust are just temporary.

This is how she sits at the moment - still pretty ugly ;D

My Electric Starter didn't work after testing it with a battery so we decided to tear it down and rebuild it with a kit off eBay. So far so good.

Thanks man! Which headers are you referring to? The ones that came on the bike? I still have them but they are in much worse shape than the pictures show...

you're an inspiration! my cb is currently in pieces and I'm at a loss. Keep it up! Can't wait to see where your bike is headed.
