CB500 Caliper piston

Im rebuilding the caliper on my 71 CB500 and would like to know at what point to give up on saving the piston. I was able to finally get it out with compressed air but there are some small nicks on top edge of it. I could probably sand down any imperfections but am worried it will leak or destroy the new seal. An OEM piston is $100+ from my local dealer. Any sources for aftermarket pistons or compatibility with other models? I did some searching and found KL products but no listings specifically for my bike. Any advice appreciated.

There are several aftermarket 'manufacturers'
E-bay will list stainless steel and phenolic.
If not, try SOHC4.net, couple of people there make them (and sell on e-bay ;D )
I would get phenolic, they don't transfer heat as much as stainless and are also lighter

I had no choice but to use channel locks to rotate it. That thing was hopelessly seized. I know it's only the top 1/4" but I get paranoid with brakes.

No. You're not being cheap. I got mine for like $50. eBay, im pretty sure, but there are other online dealers. Is this for a twin?

There is a piece missing from that piston, it should have a cap on it.
Looks like your getting a new one for $50.00
Pretty sure all the early ones are same diameter and length
BTW, I have a couple of grease fittings I made with correct thread for brake line if anyone needs to 'hire' one (pay postage both ways, around $6.00 total)
10x1.25, fits most calipers (NOT Suzuki, or some Brembo, they mostly use 10x1.00)
