CB500 Four Wheel Play?

Hey guys, so i just finished getting my wheels relaced and mounted. The shop that did the job for me also installed the new bearings and seals. After mounting the front tire back onto the forks, i noticed that the front wheel has a little play back and forth ln the shaft... This is puzzling and doesnt seem to be normal nor safe... I honestly dont recall if it had that much play from side to side before I took it off to be worked on. Also note that the front caliper system is not yet mounted. Im hoping that as soon as it is and the disk is inberween the calipers, that the wheel play will reduce but the question of a small gap being between the forks and the bearing still puzzles me...is this normal? Am i missing some sort of spacer? Will installing the brake caliper solve the problem? Help..

First question would be how much play are we talking about? Also I would doubt that putting the caliper on will solve the problem, at the very least it would warp your rotor

You have a picture of your front wheel? Both sides if you can. Sounds like you're missing some part, did you install the speedometer gear? Spacers in and correct? Check the parts against the parts in an online parts fiche diagram to ensure you have everything and in the correct order, there shouldn't be any play at all.

Here are some pics of each end. Ive looked at two different diagrams both in my manual and on cmsnl.com to see if anything obvious is missing.. But everything seems to be there from what i can tell.. The only thing that is different from the original set up are the triple trees. They are off of a 550. If they have a wider displacement then maybe thats whats causing it but the shaft is the original 500 and that seems to fit perfectly...im at a loss..

Is the shaft stationary but the wheel moves, or is the shaft itself moving?

If the shaft is stationary and the wheel moves, that sounds like a wheel bearing issue, if the shaft itself is moving, Sonreir's points are on the mark.

That gap is entirely too big. Honda axles have a "seat" that sits on the fork lowers. If I were to guess, if everything else is bolting up then you're gonna need a set of 550 speedo drive/spacers. There should be something taking up that gap in your wheel. I bet the 500 and 550 speedo drives are different especially considering the triples are different. Look up the part numbers and see if they're different.

Looking at online pictures, a cb550 obviously has a spacer that I don't see on yours. Bet that's the issue.

why is the disc rotor on backwards ?
step away from the wrenches and do some studying before you hurt yourself
you are in over your head :'(

You also appear to be missing the disc rotor bolts' lock collars

Kanticoy you're absolutely right..It hink that thr colar is missing, ill have to rummage through my parts been ands ee if it accidently slipped out of the parts bag. Is the brake rotor really on backwards? And the bolt colars are on. Nothing is tightened downt thankfully which gives me the oppertunity to fix it all. Here are somem more pics with differnt angles.

Yes - it's back to front.

It should be much closer to the fork leg - look at how your caliper sits on the disc. It should be obvious once you do that.

Gioventures it looks to me that you have a right brake mounting leg from a twin disc model on the the left side, the brake caliper is mounted towards the front not towards the back

So after trial and error, i finally have the disk sorted and mounted the proper way and also came to find that i had screwed on the axel nut backwards which is why it had that play. School boy error.. Admitingly. The nut is now screwed on properly which tightened and pressed everything together making for a sweet and perfect fit. Now i just need to move onto installing the lines and calipers. It doesnt help that the bleeder nipple on the main caliper rusted and broke off.... Now its going to be a pain to drill it out.. Any way, thats the update. Thanks for all the help guys. We learn by mistakes. Gladly this one didnt end up being a deadly one.
