I started work on my first project and the electrical is a little over my head so far. The bike as of now doesn't have a starter switch on it and I need to wire a new one in.

Here's the universal starter

Any help with the wiring process?

Just a clarification... that's an ignition switch. Starter switch (or button) usually refers to the button that spins the starter motor.

Before we begin, question: Do you want the switch to control the starter motor (like a car's ignition switch) or just an on/off for the bike?

OK.

Thick red wire onto the BAT terminal and then the black, brown, and brown/white wires all go onto the IGN terminals.

That switch has the provision for a parking light by using the ACC terminal, but it will require a relay to get it working like the stock switch, so I recommend you skip the parking light feature.

Thanks! I'll get it hooked up. Also another stupid question, but the headlight is off currently. Do all components need to be attached for the system to work properly?

Not strictly, but it can sometimes be a good idea depending on what's been disconnected. The problem with hooking up power with disconnected components isn't that things won't work, but rather than you'll cause a short circuit if any wires touch bare metal.
