Alright guys so I own a 1972 CB500 Four K0 Model. I have some nice clubman bars ill be installing for my cafe build. I'd like to use the stock throttle tube since it doesn't seem to be any different from any others except for the fact that its a closed ended tube. I'd like to install some bar end mirrors for my set up even though I already know they are essentially useless but I still want the look and style they give. I know that most bar end mirrors have an expanding clamp type bolt set up internally with open ended tube handle bars. My problem is that the throttle tube is obviously closed ended with the stock bar grips going right over. Is there any way of cutting the end of the tube and maybe cutting a hole in my stock grips to accommodate a bar end mirror set up or would it be jeopardizing the structure and or performance of the throttle tube? Has any one done this before? Are there any other options? Please let me know what you suggest. I'd like to get some experienced posts before i hack away at anything and end up spending more money. Thanks guys.
Most bar end mirrors that are inside mount can have that part of the mechanism removed so you can mount the mirror externally.
Here are all the parts to mine, just delete all the aluminum parts and the black disc:
Then just clamp it to the solid bar:
Okay, so my last post has nothing to do with the issue you were having now that I have reread your post. Is your throttle tube actually closed end, (I doubt it) or just the grip? Just cut the end off the grip and slid the throttle tube just out of the way of interfering with the throttle action.
I'm surprised if it is the throttle tube that is closed ended -- if so, I don't think it's stock Honda (although I'll admit I've only worked on one or two 500/4s, but quite a few 550s). Either way, trim it with a razor knife and you'll be fine.
It might. I'm just saying they do exist so it's not as if this one he has would be the only one to ever exist. How do we know it's even a stock part to begin with?
Also, the close-ended ones tend to be aluminum, not plastic so a razor blade isn't going to cut it. (Pun intended)
gioventures, if you do have one of these metal throttle tubes that's close-ended, you can safely grind, cut or even drill out the end of the tube without any problems. This also lets you set the throttle in a little so if your grip is narrow (or your hands are wide) you aren't rubbing your gloves on the mirror mount.
Hey guys, honestly I assumed it was closed ended since the stock grip is still attached and every time I slip it onto the new clubman bars as a mock up I always hear a solid piece at the end hit the bars when slid on. Ill take a flashlight and point it into the stock tube to see if i can see the end of the stock grips. If thats the case then ill simply just poke a hole into the rubber grips and install the bar end mirrors with the internal tube set up. If some of you guys have experience and say that the 500s aren't closed ended then it most likely also applies to mine. Let me check and get back to you guys. And its plastic, not aluminum.
Here's what yer lookin' at (I'll wager a fiver on it): the bar end plug from the stock bars has stuck to the inside of the grip, so that's what you hear when you mock it up. Cut open the end of the grip and it'll be right there.
