cb500f tail light, blinker problems HELP!

having some lighting problems...I got pulled over yesterday because my I have no rear running light. Is my stock tail light suppose to come on when I have the headlight on? Appears to have only one bulb in there, so I'm not sure what the deal is. The break light works fine.

My replaced my turn singles with some smaller ones I bought from Dime city.

(fyi, The clip that holds the light in the housing, thus completing the circuit and allowing these to work, is complete crap. broke on 3 out of the four singles. rigged up a fix by wrapping the light housing in a paper clip that pushes against the side of the singles.)

my problem is that these lights blink exceptionally show, or sometimes not at all. the cop called me out on this too.

any ideas on how to fix these two issues. I'm tired of being pulled over.

THanks!

You've got too much resistance on the blinkers. As for the tail light, there should be two filaments inside the bulb. One might be blown. Ground should be the same for running light and brake, so I don't think that's it.

Cool, I replace the tail bulb and see if that works.
How do I fix the resistance problem on the blinkers?
Sorry, I am not electronically savvy

Thanks!

Are they LED? If so, they should blink faster. Maybe the flasher is bad. Did it work fine before you replaced the turn signals?

The new blinkers are pulling more power through the system and creating more resistance. I'm thinking try a lower wattage bulb. Otherwise you'd be looking at increasing the flow for the electrical system, which is over my head.

Replace your blinker unit with a solid state one that blinks at the same rate no matter what.
about $15 at the auto parts store.

Bozz, that sounds like a good solution...any idea where this part is located on the bike? what it looks like? I'm new to all this wiring fun.

Prolly looks something like this:

As far as your rear brake light, check your wiring. There should be 3 wires going to it. 1 is your running light wire, 1 is your (brighter) brake light, and 1 is ground. It sounds like you might have it wired backwards or have a bad connection.

First hook up your taillight and get it working so it's always on. Then check the front brake signal connection (between your master cylinder and caliper line.) Then check your rear brake signal connection. (spring connected to the rear brake peddle.)

rear brake bulb was the culprit for the tail light. One of the filaments was burnt out. still working on the turn flasher problem.
