CB550 F wiring issues

Been Around the Block
Hi,

I was attempting to finish up wiring on my Cb550 F yesterday, when i ran into a couple issues.

1. the taillight will not stay on, no running tail light
2. there are two "brown and blue" female connectors where the controls connect. not sure what these are supposed to connect to.
a. one of the BR/b wires has 12v, the other has nothing.

Bit of info: running aftermarket controls. we have tested the hi lo switch, kill switch, starter, and turn signals, they all work fine. No flashing on the turn signals, but i have not installed the electronic flasher relay yet.

not sure what else to post, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. see photos for the two brown and blue wires.

anyone know where i can get the junction box for under the gas tank?

No brown/blue wires in my diagram for the 550, but I show a solid brown as the running light for the tail. There should be a series of brown/white wires that split off from a connector (possibly the ignition switch?) and go to light the tach and speedometer though.

Here's what I'm looking at:

Thanks for the reply.

Couple points. 1, there is a brown and blue wire in the diagram you provided, for the signal buzzer. This is the same as mine. 2, the diagram you provided is for the cb550, not the cb550f. I was using, trying to at least, that diagram for a while until I figured it out.

Thanks for the info on the tuning light and sharing you insight.

CB550F and CB550K are basically the same bike. They only differ by the bars, exhaust, and trim. Hope you're able to trace the problem.

+1

If you don't like that diagram, head on over to forums.sohc4.net and download the 550 owner's manual. It has a nice wiring diagram in it.

Hey guys, thanks for the input. I understand that there are few differences between the K and the F, but one of them is the wiring harness. In the F model there is an entire system (not sure that is what it is called, with one fuse) that runs off a Brown and Blue wire, straight from the fuse box. Whereas this is not the case with the K model. Check the two diagrams attached for reference.

I have been tracing the system, but I get stuck on the two female connectors as mentioned above.

I agree the Brown with a Blue tracer on the diagram you provided goes from the left controls to the turn signal buzzer. Whats more it calls out a yellow bullet sleeve (y-tube) that is in your pics and a regular sleeve shortly there after, also in your pics. After the buzzer it turns to black. If you are not running the tone generator for your turn signals that should be able to be left open. BUT that doesn't explain the tail light issue...
Now find the speedo in the diag (top left) see that loop of circut behind it? according to the diagram the line on the right turns into the top line of the two and is labeled blk, but the other that passes below goe to a bullt connector label your Brown with a blue tracer. AND it goes back to the 7A tail light fuse!. See if you have power at the fuse (should be from the brown and white at the ignition switch) and then at either of those connectors. Pull the fuse and see if the power at the connector goes out. Wonder if there is an issue with the two brown / blue with a clear bullet sleeve being crossed?

i rigged the two brown and blue wires together, and now the taillight functions properly.

Here are the good things:

1. taillight functions properly
2. 12 v at all three fuses
3. electronic relay installed (3 prong)

Here are the bad things:
1. still no flashing with the signals
2. when i turn the high beam on, or either signal switch, all turn signals come on.

I have a blown up version of the diagram in my garage and spent two hours last night trying to trace this issue, messing around with this that and the other, nothing worked.

any ideas?

I know this wont help you much, but i'm in the same boat trying to wire up a 550. The Brwn/Blu is for the stupid ass signal buzzer... weird that when you throw them together things started working out... Maybe the wire was worn funny and its not the true bwn/blu...

weird indeed.

do you have a CB550 or CB550F ? despite what some say, they have a different wiring harness. Although, someone smarter than myself could figure it out, i could not. the colours are very different. For example, the brown and blue wire. there are three on the cb550f, versus one on the K.

NEW QUESTION:
does it matter where you ground different parts (signals, idiot lights, etc) ? or can you just stick them in an open ground?

Should be able to put them on any of them. When I rebuilt my harness, I noticed they were all just piggy backing off of one long wire from back to front.

new issue!!!!

I am getting only 6v at my turn signals, any ideas why? could this have something to do with the electronic flasher?

Maybe this will help you:

http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring500.html

It's made in flash and you can disable all controls with the panel.

Thanks for link no will check it out when I get home.

Not sure if it will work though, as it is not the correct wiring diagram. Maybe some of the same concepts will apply and be helpful.

update:

With standard flasher relay in, all the lights work, every one. just no flashing (using LED signals). When i install a 3 prong electronic flasher relay, it screws everything up. When i install a 2 prong flasher relay, the turn signals are not working correctly. i will get one flash out of one side, and none from the other. i am getting 6 volts at each signal, but still no light.

whats next?

And carbs
You need to check ground wire on 3 prong electronic, there are several threads about LED indicators, about 10 days ago there was one with diagrams

Ground wire was checked. cb550f has a ground, but it is not supposed to be connected to the flasher relay. Either way, I tried a 3 prong with the ground connected and without, also tried the two prong. No luck.

I have read at least 50 other threads and printed 15 different wiring examples or photos, wit no luck.
