CB550 head light wont work and other electrical gremlins

Hi All,

I have recently changed out a trashed CB550F 77 UK harness for a much neater CB550K3 77 harness as part of a build.

I have replaced the controls for a single modern control unit, the head up display with LEDs and a new push start button mounted away from the hand controls

All was going well, the starter works, indicators work, norn works. Head light was working, as was the LEDs showing Hibeam, neutral, indicators and oil pressure. I could not get the rear light or small light in headlight. i tried putting the brown through the red/blk so that both the tail and head light would run when I turned the head light on. This didn't work and the headlight no longer works. I have since wired the tail and small light straight to black and these work fine, as do the brake lights. if I wire the head light through the live feed for the speedo light, then the head light works, so I know the bulb is good.

I have two questions:

should the black/red for the head light be live (i get no current at the minute)
when starting does the black live wires get more than 12v? the reason why I ask is that as soon as i press the starter the LED for neutral indicator and oil pressure blows

i have put on a new reg/rec which I am not sure would come into play yet anyway and the bike is not running. is that false logic?

fuses all seem fine. I am thinking it might be the switch gear itself, but any other suggestions would be great

fixed the headlight issue. after taking the switch apart and check continuity of the switchs, it turns out the the black feed to the controller, which was meant to be the main power in, was actually the light green side of the horn and the 12v into the controller was actually the white and green.

The head light main feed of Blk/red was actually the brown/red of the return from the fuse. the brown from the controller was the blk/red to the fuse.

Just need to sort the head up lights now.
