CB550 Master Cylinder Swap

phrige

I'm a pig, I'm A dog so exuse me if I drool.
I've read about doing swaps for Hayabusa or Gixxer Master Cylinders. I was wondering if it was a bolt on affair. that banjo fitting just goes right onto the new cyclinder and ta-da we have working break?

If there's any that you recommend or that have been using for a while I'd def be interested in hearing.

I need a new one since i messed my old one up. the whole thing was real crap inside, gummed up to hell. everything was rusted together in a torrid love affair between circlip and that recessed wall. Finally got iit out, I gouged up the walls too much. like waaay to much.

Dirtbag recommended the Gixxer unit, in the chat.
May go with that. They seem pretty abundant.

youll have to bleed the brakes. easy job with two people, even easier with one person and speed bleeders ;D

while your at it rebuild the caliper with new seals, pads, etc. replace the old rubber line with a new one piece stainless steel line.

hook it all up, and you should be amazed at the difference. sand your rotor while your at it; some 420 grit wet does a good job.

i wouldnt go to a hyabusa or even a gixxer... find a newer master cylinder that fits on bikes with single calipers; a ninja 250 or 500 works very well. go with the ex500 levers (get teh matching cluthc lever; they are cheap) and you have tons of options for aftermarket levers (which you might want; the ex500 levers are LONGG)

Thanks man,
Yea at the very least i plan to clean up the front caliper take out the piston and all that. The pads still have a lot of meat to them so i dunno if its worth replacing yet. And the brake lines are a definite, once I get some more $$. Debating on making it a single run, vs the joint with the brake light sensor. I'd have to figure out how to rig a new sensor but maybe worth cleaner run and an extra potential leak point.

I'll def look into the Ninja M.C. they may work nice.

ninja M.C. (and most new ones actually) have the switch built into the lever. hook up a cable and your set.

i'm running a 1999 gixxer master on my cb550. bolted straight on, no worries hakuna mattata. if you want a pic, lemme know.

if you put a larger then stock MC on, you loose almost all brake feel. essentially brake becomes a switch; all or none.

Why is that? It's just pushing oil against a cylinder.

Any modern mastercylinder is a good option. Although a caliper swap will make a better performance upgrade. I doubt you could make a cb 550 caliper feel like a switch. But who knows Rocan did google it.

the ninja 250 master are junk i went through three of them befor i just bought a old cbr master if you dont like it after it is on hang another caliper and rotor off the fucker and your done i have every thing you need now if i was cool i would put some link to prove my point or one of these :'( :-* :-\ :-X :-[ :p ::) 8) ;D lol pm me if you need any of that stuff ill hook you up

Any master will fit as long as it fits a 7/8" bar (if that's what you got) and matches your stock brake line threads, which are 10 X 1.25. Being another Jap bike I wouldn't be surprised if they fit.
