CB550 w/o air filter/ exhaust

Been Around the Block
Hello, i have read on the forums that if i plan on running no exhaust (just headers) and no air box with pod filters, i need to get new jets?
Is this a required mod?
If so, where would you recommend that i purchase the new jets for a cb550? (I have seen the jet sizing chart for different mods done to the bike)
And lastly, if im changing he jets, what other parts would you recommend that i replace as well?

thank you

Yes, any change to the exhaust or filters will probably require re-jetting.

BUT, seriously, running just the headers and then pod filters is an awful idea. If you do a quick search on this forum, you will see just how much a pain in the ass pod filters are. Keep the stock airbox and atleast put a shorty muffler on.

I think the headers won't allow enough back pressure in the system to operate properly. An added baffle inserted into the header will help, but you may as well put a muffler on.

This is coming from another Mechanical Engineer ;).

Good luck, Charlie.

Those are slide carbs, not CV carbs. therefore, they will run fine with pods if rejetted. If not rejetted, it will run like crap and probably burn holes in the pistons or burn exhaust valves. Rejetting is mandatory. Go at least 6 jets sizes larger on the main jet, and one size larger on the pilot jet, and go from there.

Only a dick runs straight pipes. Don't be a dick. I reflects badly on all of use who ride. Besides, you will get MUCH better performance with a 4-into-1 system.

Ahh my bad. Read it as cb500 at first. :)

A few assumptions are always made when reading these posts.

If asking about such a poor and ignorant modification to a bike, I will assume that the person doing it doesn't have the required skills to tune a bike in the first place. So no real help via the Internet can be given.

Asking "what jets" causes an assumption by me that they do not understand carbs, tuning or how things work. There is zero answer to that question.

It won't like short pipes which is why Honda never used them on their race bikes.
Jetting will be pretty simple if you fit a decent exhaust system

We were all there at one point, and many of us had to learn how to do this shit long before the Internet, forums, and YouTube. 8)

def get new jets with those open pipes, go 3 sizes smaller and advance the timing 5-10 degrees, find a long lonely hill and make continuous uphill runs to break in the new jets
