CB550F Charging problems SOLVED!

Been Around the Block
Hey guys,

I feel the need to let you in on this seeing as all the threads on the CB550 charging system seem to end with members saying there's nothing that can be done. The charging systems on these bikes was week from the start and there's nothing you can do about it. Fixes such as turning off all unnecessary lights during the day are a bandaid solution I wasn't willing to accept.

I sent my stator and field coil to http://www.pro-formancecycle.com/rewinding.html and had Earl rewind them. He upgraded them at the same time with larger gauge magnet wire. Now I get 13.5 volts DC from the rectifier AT IDLE! I'm going to swap out the stock regulator for one from http://oregonmotorcycleparts.com/SOHCfours.html and keep my original rectifier seeing as it's solid state anyway. Oregon Motorcycle states that their regulator will give 14.5 volts charging at 1500 RPM and I tend to believe them. If you want a good, strong and virtually new stator and field coil, give Earl a call at 1-519-942-2082. This is a Canadian business so if you're in the states, expect to pay a bit more for shipping. I live in Manitoba so it cost me about $20 each way to ship my stator and field coil.

There's another place in Quebec that does the same work and ships all over North America called RM Stator http://www.rmstator.com but I have no first-hand knowledge on them. I might look into it for my next project just to compare price etc. but if anyone out there has tried them, let me know what you think!

Go Canada!

The charging problems are all around in the CB family, if you go on to the sohc4 forums there's a thread about 20 pages long on that.

I recently made a new rectifier for my 400 based on the thread on that forum, and testing it out today, at idle my voltage is around 13.6. Supposedly if you also change the voltage regulator for a solid state one you get some better charging. Doing the whole modification is less than 50 bucks. I spent around 10 just to do the regulator.
