Since the headlight was now on all the time, the starter switch also turns off the headlight when the starter is engaged. So the starter is no longer a grounding switch, it switches 12V live.
Better double check the wiring schematic to make sure....

Your starter button is just completing a ground and everything else should be included in the diagram for the switches. You should be able to find an acurate bike wiring diagram online. If you cannot I will scan one from my manual.
