CB550f Throttle question - engine bogs and stalls

Been Around the Block
Hi all,

I'd appreciate any clue you can give me on this. I've included a video of the problem in action at the bottom of this post. At least I think it's a problem, for all I know it could be something I'm doing wrong. Here's the gist - starting from idle, if I ROLL the throttle, the bike revs properly most of the time. If I SNAP the throttle however, chances are the bike will either bog and then rev or just bog and stall all together. So the question is, if this is a problem, is it a rich/lean idle or rich/lean needle jet or something completely different?

Now some info about the setup - This is a CB550 Super Sport with stock 4-1 header and OEM muffler, new OEM exhaust gaskets that have been torqued to spec and no leaks anywhere farther down the pipe or muffler. I'm running 4 K&N pods. The carbs are newly cleaned, rebuilt and bench-sync'd and I'm going to do a dynamic sync this week. I should say that this was an issue even before the carbs were rebuilt. I've got new DynaS 5ohm coils, suppression wires and new plugs.

I'm running stock jets until I can get out on the road to start the tuning/jetting process. #98 main, #38 idle, needle jet in second slot from the top (that's a guess because I can't remember right now but it's the stock position from the factory).

If there's any info I've left out, let me know. I hope someone here can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

DualityMike

So, you're saying that this is just a normal characteristic of pods in general? I've had a look at your Facebook page - nice work!

Yes. In short, you changed the motors air fuel ratio as well as how the fuel atomizes entering the cylinders.

There's a million threads dedicated to this topic on here. Check Crazy PJs pod thread first. At least you're running good pods (though the I4s really prefer the stock airbox).

How does the bike do under load? Does it feel OK on the road?

I'm not so ready to chalk this one up to pods just yet.

it depends on the bike, generally speaking, pods don't do anything for performance on a stock engine, they sell like hotcakes because someone somewhere with a twisty moustache and one of those baggy driver looking caps thought they looked cool. when you're working on an engine, you get it running as well as you can as stock, then make a change, like doing pods, or an exhaust, etc... but only one change, not everything at the same time. at that point, you retune for that change, and attempt to make it faster than you recorded when it was stock, if you can't, then toss the mod in the trash because it's not doing anything for you. I played with pods on my cb750 for a good while, even built my own pvc stacks using a mandrel and heat to form them into a good bell, even had an exhaust gas sensor mounted onboard, and still, it was faster with the stock box. in the end, that's what matters to me, there's no sense in poser garbage when it hurts performance

Thanks Roc and Sonreir. Like I said, I haven't had a chance to rejet or see what it does under load because we've had a folder than usual spring and there's still snow on the ground here. I agree that I have to change the jetting due to the increased airflow. I'll do all that first and get back to this post once the carbs are tuned. I'd appreciate if everyone could choose to be notified of updates to this thread.

It's not the pods, I had a cb550 with a Mac 4-1 open header and velocity stacks and it never did such a thing with stock jets and I was able to get it very close to dialed in with stock jets (using a wide band....) I would try to sync the carbs before you do anything else and see where that leaves you as long as it's firing on all 4 and idling good....

Thanks. I've got a Morgan carbtune on its way in the next couple of days so that will be job #1. I'll post another video once everything is in sync.

i have a similar setup on my 550f and have no problems whatsoever. my money is on the pods though.. see if you can find a oem airbox for cheap and check if it makes any difference..
