CB550K: Gutted, Cafe, OEM+, Engine Rebuild, Bare Bones, Kick Only

Do you have the stock pipes? And if so are they clean? I could really use a much cleaner exhaust for my gals 75 550k

Hey Drey,

I do have the stock pipes but I'm holding onto to all my factory parts. Just in case the cafe route ever grows tired.

I can take a peak at the salvage yard next time I'm there. Could be some tucked away.

Love the tank, big fan of original paint. Love your screen name, too. Trad on tap is one of the only things I miss about the prairies.

Care to share some contact info on the salvage yard?

Hey, Thanks for that man! I'm happy to rock the factory paint. She's a survivor and has some shelf life battle scars but hey, I doubt I'll come across a new old stock tank again any time soon.

The salvage yard is called Edmonton Cycles and Salvage, it's their new indoor location. The guy in charge's name is Gilles (Gill).

Re: CB550K: Gutted, Cafe, OEM+, Engine Rebuild, Bare Bones, Kick Only

So I decided not to run a rear loop. I chopped the fender bridge and shaped the rear fork ears. Pretty happy on the look :). I put my OEM tank on to decide what I want to do for a seat now that I'm selling the BCR stuff.

Should I brace the frame end since I chopped the fender bridge? It was thin stamped steel so I don't think it was really structural. or I hope not. 8)

I attached a photo of a Kott seat that I am considering for this build.

Looks great! I'm in.

That salvage yard looks like a good place to scrounge parts. If you're ever down in Calgary check out The Old Bike Shop...If you haven't already. Cool vibe. Lots of old stuff to look at and cool projects they are working on.

Nice work so far, As for the brace question. Are you putting the fender back in? the steel you cut isn't the brace, the fender is, if you look at the spot the fender bolts to the fram you will see it is heavily re-enforced and braces the back end. If you are not putting it back, brace the frame or it will flex all over the place

Re: CB550K: Gutted, Cafe, OEM+, Engine Rebuild, Bare Bones, Kick Only

Thanks for the reply! I will not be running the fender. I will make some sort bracket that goes from side to side to mound the seat. That should do the same thing the fender did I assume.

If you look at all of Dustin Kott's builds he does not brace the rear end at all. Wonder if the flex would even be noticeable under normal riding conditions?

See below.

Re: CB550K: Gutted, Cafe, OEM+, Engine Rebuild, Bare Bones, Kick Only

Hard to say for sure, the frame has a brace right before the shock mounts, so it might be ok although there is a lot of other fellas on here that can tell you if you need a brace back there. I can't click the link here at work you posted and I don't know the builder you mentioned, although there are a lot of so called pro builders who do stuff that is not the right or safe way to do things. personally if you don;t want to run the fender I would cut the section that braces the frame out and bolt that in anyway, seat will hide it likely and then there is no worries. I hopped on my CX without the fender bolted in and rode it and could feel the flex in the back end, next test ride had the fender bolted in and it was much better, similar rear frame as yours.

Scroll down on this page. He makes some of the nicest cafe builds I've ever seen. None of the tail sections are braced though. Thanks for the input. Appreciated!

Haha, yeah man!

I'm heading to the salvage yard to look for an exhaust for you tomorrow. Hopefully I can find something good.
