Anybody have any ideas on how to get the allen bolt out of the cartridge (the allen bolt on the bottom of the fork). The bolt and cartridge spin together while trying to remove it. I have tried with the fork together and disassembled as well as an air impact wrench. The damn this just spins and I cant get a grip on it. Any ideas would be great before I drill it out.
You need to stop the damper rod from spinning (obviously). Old skool way is to ram a broom handle down there and hammer it into the end of the damper rod, then impact wrench the bolt out. Or buy a damper rod tool.
I tried to use the wood handle on my rubber mallet but that didnt work, I'll try the broomstick idea tomorrow. Yes, it was an air impact wrench not the hammer style. I don't understand why they didnt put a nut at the top of the tube to hold on to
The broomstick method worked for me only I used a stair rail picket. Cut it to the correct length for it to have pressure on in with the fork cap installed partially. Heat on the bolt to loosen the LocTite is probable. Air impact the screw out.
I have always used an air impact wrench on damper bolts with the forks fully assembled and I have never had one not come out. Maybe yours has been loctited.
I used a propane torch to heat up the bolt but it's still in there. My broom stick at home is plastic so I need to find a wood dowel some where and try it out. I'm about to just drill the head off the bolt, then heat it up and use a vice to hold the bolt end and vice grips to turn the damper free.
Finally got it out today. I used a screwdriver with a rubber handle and I put in inside the damper - the phillips head went inside the damper and the handle stuck out the top of the fork tube. I flipped the fork tube over so the screw driver handle was on the ground and I drilled the bolt head out. Once the head came off I was able to heat up the bolt and use a vice and vice grips to remove the bolt. The small victory but it felt great.
