So i bought a new battery for my bike that had been sitting for 10 years hooked it up to see if the electronics worked, nothing happened checked the battery and it drained down to 3.5volts within minutes, I've been told a short is the suspect. How do i locate the short? Tips/advice? first timer here, thanks! bike is a 73 cb750 with a new reg/rec and fuse panel

What kind of battery? Was the battery fully charged before you used it?

If the battery was 12Ah and fully charged, you would need to be pulling 140 amps to drain it in five minutes. That's more than your starter motor uses and is enough power to melt all your wires and set your bike on fire.

^hey thanks for the response, sadly its a quite exspensive battery its the lithium ion ballsitic 8cell battery, i didnt check it before i installed it, the box has a manufactur date of november, i think i completely damaged the battery as well :(

Anything under 9V on a LI-ION battery means it's completely dead. No coming back from that kind of damage.

LI-ION are well known for their ability to quickly discharge a load. So it's entirely possible the battery could have shorted and cooked its internals. 20 seconds of full output is usually enough to do it.

Always make sure your electrical system is in good health before swapping to LI-ION.
