CB750 F3, With A Touch of Madness

Ok so here I am going to start my first build thread of my second cafe bike. I Bought a K8 from a friends dad with a seized engine, I pulled it apart and got it unstuck only to find out after hammering the pistons out I cracked a sleeve. So, I picked up an f3 for cheap with no title, with an engine that turns over. My plan is to swap most of the parts of the f3 over to the k8, since the k8 has a title. I'm liking the rims and the 3 discs all around, I think i will stick with the original equipment and just rebuild it all. here is a series of pics of all of the stuff.

My direction to go with this is a very empty clean look, trying to make it look as simple as possible, hiding all of the electronics under the seat and such. I want to have the frame bare behind the engine, with an oil tank that sits in front of the tire like this

Then here's where I get a little over my head, some of you may just click to another thread after I say this. I want to make a 1 piece body, with a false gas tank shell, going to a more boxy tail end, that will double as a 2 up for the ladies :). The body will look similar to the contours of this bike, as you can see where those black stripes are on the rear, a light pad for a seat would totally fit in normal. This one piece shell would fold open to have access to the gas tank and all of the electronics including relays, fuse boxes, and a rev limiter and a lithium ion type battery (small). I am looking at a digital all in one speedometer from ebay, it's chinese. My fingers ar crossed, hoping that the $50 will be well spent. It has a digital speed display, a rev count up to 12k, gas guage, gear counter, and all the turn signals high beams and such. I picked up an NOS gear indicator for the 750, tested it out, and it seems to work very well, I am only concerned about the copper screen printed on the pcb and how long it will last with the shift drum mechanism.

for the body I plan to try and do a vacuum form job, my buddies dad does stuff like that at work. hopefully they will have an oven big enough, and probably have a vaccum big enough otherwise I could build one out of plywood. I'm thinking the color scheme will be gloss black body and engine (engine may be satin) with a neon blue frame, with the stock f3 rims with the big spokes gloss black. I'm 18, soon 19, so I will want to show off the engine and such with a white underglow underneath the seat shining down. That doesn't mean I'm going to chrome the bike, I will just polish the valve cover and footpeg mounts. I wanna go stainless with all of my bolts if possible, and a powder coated frame. But of course, all of this happens after my engine is rebuilt

I know the f3s were known for premature exhaust valve guide wear, due to the angle and high lift the cams had on these bikes. These problems could be seen as early as 5,000 miles. The solution is bronze guides, and I am wondering where I would go to get the best guides, and how do I install them?

Dynoman, Cycle X, APE will have what you are looking for. Probably best to leave the removal and installation up to an expert unless you have access to the proper equipment needed for the job. Most places will bead blast the ports before removing the old guides and there can be some fine tuning involved in re installing new guides.

My project has very similar roots, I started with an ultra cheap 1973 K, needed an engine and got a great deal on an entire 78F that was disassembled and in good shape. I am building the 78 and selling the parts from the 73 to fund and recoup part of my expenses.

Good luck with your project, will be watching your progress.

will be following this one!
great to see another young builder on here and that I am not alone (although couple years older than you :p)

some of the older farts on here may reject the idea of the underglow but Im digging the idea haha (no disrespect to the elders here!)

cant wait to see how it turns out

good luck!

Hey thanks man! Its not exactly underglow, more of illumination of the bike. to look cool and for safety. Just white light. @NagChampa, How much would be reasonable for the installation of the valve guides?

I really could not say how much it would cost, have not started the head rebuild yet. Don't be afraid to shop around but make sure the shop is a good one.
