CB750 Idle's REAL high every now and then

This has happened to me about 3 times now, and i'm starting to feel unsafe taking my bike out. I'll go around the block and before I know it while I have the clutch in neutral around a turn the engine all of the sudden rev's real high. So instead of waiting to see what it does or if it stops and go back to normal I kill the bike and immediately feel like going home and driving my car. I would hate if this "revving" happened while I was going on the road or highway. The last piece of info... This last time I kept the engine at idle while just sitting there and when I started to move the bike back or forward you could hear the engine start to want to idle more... NO idea why that was happening.

I've read it could be 4 things. Air leak near the carbs. Throttle cable could be getting stuck or gunked up. The floats in the carbs could be getting stuck, or the needles.

Before I start messing around, would like to get everyones opinion on what they think it is so I can narrow my hunt down. Would love you input and expertise.

Thanks a million!

Here she is...

That's a pretty sharp looking bike. I highly recommend a fork brace and/or fender though.

I'm not entirely familiar with 750 carbs, but you can check the throttle cable pretty easily. Just let it snap shut while the engine is off - if it does it easily regardless of which way the handle bars are turned it should be good. Most likely your throttle problem is caused by a leak between the carbs and motor. Have you replaced the intake boots?

What Rich said ;)
Sounds like it could be an air leak. I'd also check the floats for leaks and make sure all the levels are good.

Cheap emgo pods make for tuning nightmares too....
-Air leaks
-cable

Where the carbs jetted for the pipe and pods?
SOHC4s HATE cheap pods and dont really like any pods

The carbs were tuned and jetted to the pipes and pods as is in the picture.

In your opinion, would stacks instead of pods make any difference? I'm just not a fan of putting the clunky air box back on.

Thanks everyone! I'll be looking into the connections from the carbs to the engine to look for leaks. And if that's not it the floats in the carbs.

Keep you all updated.

The key point I read is "around a turn"

If the cables aren't routed correctly, the throttle will open when you turn or move the bars - try running it on the main stand and turning the bars, does it rev up?

Stacks will make the bike run better and can be tuned to get actual increases in power (pods make less power then stock) but its not really worth it as stacks are only meant for the track, they let to much shit in the engine for the street. Yes they sell screens, some go on the top and others go on the bottom of the stack, this totally defeats the idea of a stack and brings the set up right back to a decrease level like pods.

Really I dont understand the point of pods on a CB750. Most are willing to deal with the small power loss, or not even realize there is a loss, for hte look of the "open triangle". On a CB750 you have the oil tank there. So if jetting is a black art I would assume that fabbing custom oil tanks is too. So its a tone of work to not really get the copy cat look of the CB350 guys.

Two nice performance options are small mods to the stock airbox and a K&N drop in filter
or search out the "anti pod" mod on the SOHC4 site

All of this is slightly off the original topic
It is a good point that if this is only happening when the bars are moving then maybe the cables are pulling on the carbs, if not keep looking for air leaks

Welp, totally turns out the when I last adjusted the bars the throttle cable got shorter. So just like TwinPlug and Surffly suggested, I just re routed the throttle cable so it doesn't pull on the carbs open. I'm really glad that was an easier fix than checking the floats. haha.

Still a newb's so thanks for all the help.

- Surffly, I'll look into the anti pod thing, but at the moment I don't notice anything wrong or different with the pods. I'll keep an eye out tho for newer/better mods. Thanks!
