CB750-Magni Agusta Build

rockcitycafe

I make things.
Ok. I've finally come to that point in time where the time/money equations are somewhat in alignment. Seems like I either had time, but no money, or money but no time... now I have some of both, and here's what I want to build for the summer

1.jpg

I have a few cb750's to play with, and a bunch of cool toys (tig, lathe, mill, english wheel). I figured I'd start working on getting the main parts (tank, seat, fender) together asap, and I'll be getting the frame blasted and coated soon, so I hope it'll go together quick. The first part was the tank, and I had a neat idea tonight... I have a bunch of half tank seconds from a mold I build a while ago, but the shells are really too short for the race tank, soooooooooo

I think this works better than mocking up and building an entire new tank!!

and more to come on this one

This should be a cool build. I have done the same, but with a steel Rickman micro metisse tank, it is still in work though.

Being a transplanted central NY native, it is cool to see something decent come out of Rochester.

wow, what is planed for the motor mild or wild?

depends on whether I've got presidents or crazy inventor ambassador guys in my wallet

I would love to do a megacam race grind, deep pocket lightened pistons, better valve springs, lightened crank and lightened conrods, but I may have to just keep the engine stock and go with velocity stacks and a nice megaphone exhaust... we'll see

Very cool. I have feeling that this is going to come out looking really cool. How are planning to do the fairing? By the way, I'm really liking the seat that you sent me.

glad you like the seat! I'm planning on doing the fairing in fiberglass too, I wanted to do this build in aluminum only, but glass is so much quicker to work with, I'll probably mock up foam over an assembled 750 I have, then glass it and figure out my mounting points on the frame, so I can weld on brackets before it gets blasted and powdercoated. The fun part is going to be the windscreen, for that I'm actually planning on glassing the whole fairing, as if the clear part were fiberglass too, then cutting it off, and reinforcing it to make a vacuum forming tool so I can have some lexan stretched over it and match the fairing perfectly... we'll see, pics to come of course!

Rock,

I like your idea for getting a good screen mold, but you know it's extremely hard to thermo form optical quality clear parts, right? We used to cover molds in something we called "mole skin" I think (it's been over a decade since I worked in a vac form shop).

Although with a decent thickness of lexan you could buff out minor imperfections.

Be careful stretching the tank that it doesn't look like it has flat sectiopn. When I worked for limo builders the trick was to add a straight length to a curved roofline without it looking like a flat section bookended with curves. Typically a slight angle to one end helped that - in other words the car was kinked if you will before adding the section.

A big SOHC guy I like the idea of this build.

Is the fairing going to be a one-off deal or are planning to sell them?

I'm not planning on building a mold... yet... I might, but I usually find that I'll only sell one or two of those kinda specialized parts, so it's not worth the time to mold one

You might find a market with the vintage racing types. There seems to be quite a few over on caferacer.net I don't know, it's just a thought.

have some progress pics

frame1.jpg

got all the guts off the frame, ground off all unfunky junk...
frame2.jpg

frameneck.jpg

welded on some mounts for fairing holders, not sure what the fairing is going to look like 100%, so I put some in places I figured I'd want to mount it
despokedrim.jpg

got the spokes taken apart, ordered new Buchanans... another cool note, after shootin the shit with my friend who works at the bike shop, we decided that I should grab another 17" rear 2 1/2 rim from another 750 and use it in the front too, so this bike will be sporting a 140/70 17 in the rear, and a 110/70 17 in the front, very low profile and should handle real nice... also, when calling Buchanans, they actually helped me out and are making the spokes for the front hub/rear rim at the same cost as the standard spoke set... lemme tell ya, these guys are awesome too! I was expecting to have to dumb down what I wanted to do, but they were one step ahead of me... worth the $$$ these are!

hub2.jpg

the front and rear hubs now look like this...

layup1.jpg

mocking up the tank... not sure I like the look, I think I might just start from scratch and make the seat and tank at the same time
layup2.jpg

still not sure on the tank shape

Rock-

Something didn't work there on that tank. It is too consistent in girth, i think. That said, maybe deepening and lengthening the indents would help!?!?!?! Or somehow tapering it toward the back...

yeah, I'm not a fan either, I wanted to do it that way to save time, but I think for a build like this, I just need to buckle down and model a new tank and seat, I've been doing glass for years so it shouldn't really take all that long and at least I'll get what I'm looking for

I think the tank is just overall too tall. I think that Maybe if you took like 1"-1.5" out of the bottom of it it would look alright.

looking good! man it is looking good! i wish i could work materials like you, i would love to make seats and tanks for my build! i made my seat but it does not look close to as good as yours!

My $0.02: I think the tank has potential, but it needs to be just a bit shorter. I have a feeling that unless you have really short legs the indents need to be stretched out quite a bit. That seat is very nice. I'm looking forward to this one.

I have also been looking for ideas for my cb 500 four and after I found a picture I took couple of years ago in Italy, I have been thinkg all red might just do the job :)

I quite like the look of the seat and tank, with some larger indents in the tank i think you would have captured the agusta style.

all red is sick! so is a blue with red wheels... i am a big fan of blue bikes lately... HD makes a color you can get at hot rod flatz, it is a flat blue... prob the coolest flat color i have ever seen! something like this with maybe a white frame or white and chrome accents...
hot rod flatz are super easy to shoot... if you dont have a gun you can get a harbor freight HVC gun...
Single stage urethane, real easy to use. Prepped the tins with 320 grit. Used a 1.4mm nozzle in a hvlp gun. 50 percent overlap, two coats, done. Spray it like paint not primer.

I agree. The indents are making your tank look taller and longer than it really is. Match those indents and it looks like you have it. Nice build so far. I wish I could work glass like that!
JRK, that blue on blue is jaw dropping. Very sexy. I think the red on red looks very cool on the bike too. Troy
