CB750, the project begins.

I think I'm just going to clean up the shaft and grease the hell out of it through that grease fitting on the bottom. The bushings and sleeve look good, it's just the swingarm that is pretty rough.

You did a really nice job wrapping those pipes! I aslo like what you did with the fender. Looks good so far.

Question, Do I really need this canister for anything?

VEry nice so far Matt!!..
If Im not mistaken, that is an engine breather tube that connects to the bottom of the air-filter assembly.
On my cb750, since Im running pods, I just simply disconnected that whole assembly, shortened that tube and put a crankcase airfilter, (mini pod filter), at the end of it!!

Just out of curiousity Matt, what size wrap did you end up using?... the 1 inch or the 2 inch thickness? and how of it did you use?

Do yourself a favour and bondo up the holes and indents in the side covers as long as they're just primed. Ditching the badges really cleans up the look. I did mine years ago and never regretted it. Consider mudding the tank badge indents too.

Like Leon said you can skip the breather canister as long as A) keep the vents open and B) filtered somehow (not so much filtered as preventing shite from getting inside)

I crunched the end of header in a little get off once and cut the end off of a propane torch canister as a replacement. Looks like it might fit yours too.

If you want to take the time you can push out the swing arm bushings and install fresh.

Those old singles can take alot of abuse. I routinely spin mine past 7K. I joke that the rev-limiter is in my head and it doesn't work that good.

I also have a 78 cb750F which is torn down to cafe. That thingy is like a re-breather. There were quite a few posts about it on the SOHC4 forum.

I decided to leave mine, as I'm sticking with the stock airbox and my bike is really dialed in performance wise. If you're going with pods, you can loose it and follow some recommendations here.

Your bike will look killer.

How did banging in the knee dents go. I'm thinking of doing the same...

Good idea on the crankcase filter. I'll work something out and do the same.

I used the 2 inch wrap. I ended up using the whole 50' roll to do my headers.

Noel, if you have to do another set some time, I'd be happy to help. :)

I never thought about using a propane torch. I'll see if it may fit. I'm open for anything at this point.
The swingarm bearings seempretty good. I'm just going to clean up and respray the swingarm and grease it up.

The 78' CB750 might be older than me, but I'll beat on her for sure.
I'm going to clean up and re-use the badging. If I don't like the look, I may fill the mounts.

The knee dents was pretty simple. I just felt bad about hammering in a decent tank. The paint was toast on it, but it was dent free. I found it didn't cave in after the first few hits, and I kept thinking I had made a big mistake, but then it just popped. Then it was just a matter of matching up both sides. Give it a shot if you want. It's not that bad.

I might have a spare set of bronze bushing around for your swing arm...
I'll have to look. let me know if Ur intersted and mabe we can trade for something!!..

Cheers

I"m going to keep the bushings that are in there and see how it goes, but if I need them, I know where to look. Thanks Noel ;D

Update time.

I've had the day off, so I have been working in my fathers heated garage spraying the swingarm, tank, side panels, and the seat is soon to follow.

Here's some pics of the progress.

I know this is not Cafe related, and it's kinda from one of the dreaded POWER RANGER BIKES!
A little secret,
(Sportbikes kick ass ;))

I picked up a tweaked Yoshimura RS3 Tri-Oval can off a ZX9R in the summer. It was pretty tweaked at one end, but I knew I could clean it up if I cut it down. I ended up cutting about 4-5" off the end of the can. I used some painters tape to get a straight line, and cut the can with a zipcut blade in my grinder. I cut the core, and riveted the can back together.

100_0401.jpg

I used the core of the baffle inside the CB750 exhaust. It JUST fit... and I should be able to drill into it and use some machine screws to fix the baffle in place. I still need to find something to use as an end cap.

100_0402.jpg

You could try what I am trying, I have a Kerker 4/1 on my bike, the can is rusty and dented up pretty good. The pipe size on the header outlet is 2.5 inch. I went to Summit and picked up a Borla 2.5 in ehx tip, see here http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BOR%2D20104&N=700+4294923429+400310+4294922678+4294783510+4294906107+4294904092+115&autoview=sku
I then took the baffle from the Kerker can and cut it down to size so that it`ll fit inside the header/tip. It`s a work in progress so I won`t know for a while how it sounds/performs but it looks pretty mean. I have the pipes off the bike right now for clean/paint/wrap.....(maybe I should start a project post?).

Tanks on, and it looks good so far. Swingarm has to go back on soon, and then I can have a rolling chassis. She's really coming along.

Shoot - Noel, that's what your bike should look like! Nice work.

Thanks Tintin.

The paint turned out pretty decent.

Are you a painter? Or am I confusing you with another member?

Alrighty then. I'm getting loaded at my buddies place, but I've been working on the bike all day, but I've got the time to update my build thread.

I've been busy.

I polished the side cover
100_0439.jpg

painted an engine case (but I need a new gasket now that I took it off...)
100_0436.jpg

Cleaned up the rear rim, sprocket, and mounted the freshly painted swingarm.
100_0435.jpg

Drilled the sprocket cover
100_0434.jpg

Cleaned the rust off the battery box, and painted it
100_0433.jpg

I finally got the stator cover gasket I needed, and the be-hatch fired right up. I've got to sync the carbs though, the adaptors are in for my motion-pro mercury vaccuum guages, so she was sucking alot of air without the hoses attached.

Smoked like a bastard too! Header wrap, engine paint, and a slight bit of rust proofing spray from storage makes a lovely smell

Time to get the seat finished, and put her on the road.

I wired the front signals with the stock wiring. I don't really want the fronts to be running lights. I'm going to start checking wiring diagrams, unless anyone has an answer for me? ;)
