Ok, this is not really my build but i talked a friend into buying a bike. He picked up this CD175. Plan so far is a semi restore/ mild cafe racer. He is broke and has no camera so im going to document the build for him.

First job to get it running is to change the oil.

Its a 69 CD175, kinda a pain to find parts for. But it has a cool toaster tank.

Re: FFJMOORE CD175

I will take ownership, this bike is mine and FFJmoore is correct in that this is my first bike and I really have no idea what I am doing. On the otherhand, I am not broke(close but not broke) and I am trying to strike the balance between fixing a motorcycle and staying happily married.

Having said all this, I will try post what I have learned, maybe ask some questions, and maybe field some questions by others who are hoping to rebuild\restore one these themself.

So far what I have learned is that there is not much help on these bikes(I do have a Chiltons Manual on order), compared to Honda's more popular bikes.

Please feel free to comment, advise or ask questions. thanks

Re: FFJMOORE CD175

So far I have:

1. Cleaned a rusty tank. I used Naval gel thinned it with water and soaked the inside of the tank. Rinsed with baking soda water and sprayed it with wd40 and ended up with a pretty clean tank.

2. Cleaned carb

3. Verified correct timing(confirmed spark)

Which brings me to the first costly mistake of many so far. I dont have a battery for the bike yet(6 volt). I pulled my car up alongside, jumped the starter and was able to get the bike running, man was I excited. I was so excited I failed to realize that leaving a 12 volt system hooked up to a 6 volt system was probably not the best idea. After I shut the bike down I heard a hissing noise coming from the ignition coil. It was overheating and slowly expelling a waxy substance from a pinhole crack in its case.

I am know considering switching the system over to 12 volt.

Re: My Junky old CD175

Well, this is the latest on this project.
I ended up buying a 6 volt battery for the bike at a local battery store, put it in the bike and at first had no luck getting it started. The starter on the bike was not up to the task. After a while we started to kick it over and it ran.

The carb needed some adjusting to idle correctly, but we actually got the motor to run.

I got the new tires in, so i replaced the liner, tube and the tire, threw the wheels on the bike and rode it up and down the street.

I am still having issues with throttle sticking, the innards(whatever you call them) that allow the throttle handle to pull the cable will stick and then the throttle sticks open.

The newest challenge is to get the ignition and they key to work correctly

Re: My Junky old CD175 Darwin

Well, i have had to slow down on the project a little. But..... Most recently i changed out the fork seals, that went relatively smooth, probably would have helped to order the correct seals.

A few days ago I purchased drag bars and a new throttle online. The old throttle is an intenal setup and does not have a smooth operation and has caused a few problems.

Presently,I am working on fiberglassing a new seat. I found some instructions on the internet and i am going to give it a shot. I will try to give a decent play by play.

By the way FFjmoore "rule #4"

Well Tony has been busy fiberglassing and bondoing. Looks like it is going to turn out good.

SO.. he got the bike out of the truck bed....and pushed it around the parking lot making motor noises but I think the battery is dead. Still, it looks nice.

high speed noises or low speed noises? (ahaha) ;D

Seat does look good though, well done ;)

I've got pretty much the same bike, but I've fitted the 5 speed gears set out if a cb175. The Keihin on mine was shot ( top cap stripped and slide tube worn) so its currently waiting on a VM24 Mikuni to make its way from the US. I had the internal throttle fitted to drag bars, but could never get it to return without help, so I replaced the RHS switch block with a CT110 postie bike part, night and day difference.

Thought I would update the post. These pictures were taken this afternoon.

Overall price?
I'm also thinking about buying myself my first 1969 honda cd175. Just wanna know how much I should pay for this bike. It is running and looks pretty sweet.

Thats funny. My recommendation is dont buy it. Unless its really cheap. Most the parts are a little different on this model and are difficult to come by.
