CG125 OHV Build Oddessy

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Cantonese style)

Hi Glenn, I'm still planning to go down the fuel cell route with a tank cover.....
Using an old villiers stationary engine tank, which I may slice the bottom inch off and have a flat plate welded.

However if I do ever monoshock it I have a radical Idea for the fuel storage

The trip to the breakers landed me a complete Honda yoke set for a pittance.
I'll be much more confident in the front end clamped securely in this little puppy :)

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Cantonese style)

It's a bit like this here .... spending most of my time putting on and taking off snow chains, humping bales and breaking ice in water troughs.

P1030193.jpg

I've had the rear triangle bracing boxed in and slapped some primer on. Will try to get some temporary top coat on it this weekend if I can find another brush.
This is a proofing build and I want a protective surface rather than a concours finish.

We're due another tump of snow tomorrow night so I don't know if I'll be able to get new head bearings for a day or two.

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Cantonese style)

There will be a brief intermission while the paint cures. ;)
It's a satin black radiator brush paint which gives a strong surface but it takes a few days to get there.
Added to the fact that it's stupid cold here, I know for some of you guy's -10's+ is nothing.
I'm starting to plan the rear sets and will see if I can get some 10mm aluminum plate: I need them to reach back quite far, about an inch forward of where the passenger pegs were and down an inch or so. Something like 8 - 9" so I need structural strength.
The gear change will be GP style and I'll probably reuse and shorten the original brake pedal.

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Cantonese style)

Damnit!
I was looking forward to bolting everything back together over Crimble but ........
When I came to put the trees back on I found that the bearing cups on the frame were damaged, back of the upper and front of the lower.
Couldn't get replacements from the nearest Honda franchise, so I have ordered a taper race conversion kit off evilbay. $30.
So it looks like I'll just have to clean up and paint the outstanding parts and start to make ply templates for the rear sets.

On the upside Beachcomber is getting some ace bars off to me ( Massive Thanks :))

Glenn, I had a GP set up on a GT500.
And yes, I know exactly what you mean!

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Cantonese style)

lookin good! keep us posted...

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Cantonese style)

Picked up some M10 bolts to replace the wimpy undersized originals.
Then mostly drank.
Happy Christmas dudes :)

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Built by a muppet)

Taper race head bearing conversion arrived today :D
I stripped the frame back down as I felt it would be easier to mount the frame to the engine rather than mounting the engine into the rolling chassis. Job's a good'un.

So the build stage has fallen in line with the new year, which bodes well.
Party time now.
HNY dudes.
;)

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Built by a muppet)

Put the rolling chassis together this evening.
(Which produced a new list of snags to be attended to) :(
A buddy came up to see how it was going, and left me with a shopping list.
I want to use 10mm ally plate for the rearset plates, so he's going to make me an over length swinging arm spindle and two threaded rods for the two mounting points at the bottom of the cradle ( formally brake pivot tube and centre stand pivot).
There are no springs in the forks btw.
Shame because its a wicked stance.

Re: CG125 house special chow mein (Built by a muppet)

Looks like you may have to strip the forks and raise them up an inch or so?
2" travel and 1.75" clearance isn't going to be pretty ;D
Have you tried removing the fork springs and checking you have clearance with forks compressed?

That is the forks with the springs removed! There is meant to be 4 1/4" of travel and I'll limit the slide of the forks to accommodate this to start with.
Incidently PJ, I told my mate I wanted to brace my forks, and bearing in mind he's a engineer with no bike experience at all, went on to explain what he'd machine up to do the job. He described your cb brace exactly so showed him your thread!

Cool, knew you wouldn't let the side down ;D
I'm a failed mechanical engineer, couldn't do the math ;)

Re: CG125 house special - rearset plates?

So, working on a template for the rearset plates:
The three mounting points are a given, and the footrest position is where the green dot is.
I'm at odds on how to shape the plate, It actually looks better uncut some how.
Your thoughts welcome.

Re: CG125 house special - rearset plates?

i like the shape of the first one, mayby put some speed holes in there to give it some "racing look".

Re: CG125 house special - rearset plates?

damn slick bike.

Re: CG125 house special - rearset plates?

Hey Glenn, Happy New and all that.
I'll be after offcuts from 150mm x 10mmm flat stock, which will just bridge the mounting points securely.
But gives little opportunity to curve the top line.
I may convert the rear brake to cable operation. Dunno yet.
Was thinking of reusing the stock brake lever shortened and mounted behind the plate, so it curved up from underneath the plate and having a brake rod. Then having the same style for the gear change, so it operated the gear change rod behind the plate which would make for easier alignment.

P1030235.jpg

I called into the metal suppliers, they had no 10mm off cuts, but I scored some 12mm plates ;D ;D ;)
This stuff is so thick I almost got aroused! ;)
I am now in more of a quandry on the design, this stuff is seriously load bearing, and depending on the shape, there is enough left to get the levers out of as well.
Argh!
Do I go cable? Or rod, Actuating lever behind plate or in front? Brake drum arm flipped up?
Making the levers out of this stuff would be sick.

Re: CG125 house special - rearset plates?

I dug the loom out this evening and bit the bullet. Snip snip snip

This is the Batteryless, ignition only CDI circuit that from my trawling I reckon will fire this puppy up.

Re: CG125 house special - Tool time

P1030253.jpg

Having drilled out datum holes I shall mostly be shaping the plates with the aid of a spoon, some adult bonjela, a cassette of This Mortal Coil with an inspitrational post card of some 17th century marble buttocks from the Three Graces (Antonio Canova 1757-1822)

Re: CG125 house special - Tool time

Jigsaws are so 2010 Glenn,
I'm going to get the other 2 mounting holes and the footrest plotted.
I'd like to leave enough meat there to allow me to move the footrest position if it's not right.
I'll probably do a simple triangle to start with then get sculptural with it after!
