CG125 OHV Build Oddessy

Just read the whole thing. Cool build so far. Is that seat stable?
Yup, it's surprisingly solid. It is concave so there is inherent structural strength to it.
Whether it will stand up to the massive G forces created by the raging 11bhp will remain to be seen ;)

Re: CG125 house special - beat the crap out of the tank.

Bollocks to it.
In battering the tank I closed up the tunnel a bit and it wouldn't slide back over the top tube.
So I opened it back up with a hydraulic body gizmo .
When I got back home it had closed back up again. Jeez.
Do I open it back up, wedge it, then apply some heat to relax it??

Got the gear linkage sorted and operational today.
Ordered a race CDI but was out when the postie came so have to trek to civilisation to collect it.

yeah goddamn speed holes are on the agenda but I need to know everything is sound first.
On the brake side I need to fit the micro switch and return spring on the inside yet so I'm glad
I hadn't done them as I would have nothing to tap into.

Re: CG125 house special - So near yet so far

Brake switch with return fitted.
Thanks for the pointers Louie :)

So many piddly little fabrications to do, including:

Exhaust bracket,
Rear set mounting tubes welding
New shocks
Get a horn
Do MOT wiring

And so on.
It's like wading through mud. :(
Just want to take it for a spin!

Re: CG125 house special - So near yet so far

8) Where is the hill climb?
Make sure to take a bunch of pics and post in Lounging at da club
Your going to need more than just a brace for MOT, the tyre has to be covered although I forget the angle. (somewhere around 60 degrees from axle line, it's how dirt bikes with high mudguards can mount under bottom yoke)
Where are you getting MOT done?
May be someone I know if its Thunder Road
Sounds like they are using ACU/FIM specs for bar clearance as it was 2" a few years ago (actually, about 20 yrs ago ;D )
I very much doubt that Bridgend police are more 'motorcycle friendly' than they were 13 yrs ago?
Is there still a Police station in Blaengarw? (it was only manned 3 days a week when I was there  )

All for now,

PJ

Hey,
The first hillclimb is at Margam this Saturday and Sunday.
The bike will be finished by then but I can't persuade my mate to race it ........
I've not got the leathers etc or the entrance fee, so it'll be the one at the end of the summer for me.
I've refitted the mudguard with clamps for when I MOT it, either at Thunder Road (Mike?) or the one up the Ogmore.
We've still got a police station, but it's not manned very often, and then by PCSO's (Community Police)
Don't have much power but we've had some really good ones :)
A couple of years ago one of them, a wee dut of a girl, commandeered a bus to chase kids who were snowballing passing cars. Not only did she catch them but they didn't dare keep on running. Formidable.

I think I'll be fine in the Valley, but expect some grief from the Bridgend Feds.
Regs are now 30mm clearance between bars and tank.

Re: CG125 house special - So near yet so far

Shocks arrived and fitted. Bike sits up a bit more behind, and they've got to perform better than the Chinese OEM. 320mm rather than 310mm.
Tacho mount plate 80% done.
Exhaust bracket and rear set tubes cut.

Re: CG125 house special - So near yet so far

Tacho fitted.
Pretty much ready to get fuel for it tomorrow.
Having problems locating a local supplier of bullet connectors to replace the temporary 'chocolate bar' which is proving to be crap.
I've even managed to get the front wheel more centred in the forks.

Re: CG125 house special - Shake down

Bought a couple of litres of petrol, rebuilt the old petcock with the innards of a crappy new one and fitted an in line fuel filter. Took a guess which way was 'run' on the freshly wired stop switch ......... First kick .........
Fires straight up :) :)

Adjusted the tick over down to a steady 600rpm. Sweet as a nut, I really like this little push rod engine.

P1030383.jpg

The exhaust is still a little too loud so I think it needs another chamber added to the end of the megaphone.
Rear brake needs major adjustment, front brake worked well enough to scrub off speed but not convincing enough to trust in an emergency. Couldn't adjust clutch to a setting that gave full engagement and the ability to engage neutral with the engine running ........... whats that all about? Seat needs some padding. Forks have vastly improved with the better triple tree and overhaul. They may prove to be too soft though.
The new shocks on minimum spring preload seemed a little stiff at low speeds ( I was just pottering about in the low gears)
I've lifted the needle fully, it was on position 3 of 4. I expect to go up a main jet size with the engine breathing more freely now. The MZ tacho is a quality bargain for $6 :)
Got to get all the electric gubbims into a box. I haven't plugged the Race CDI in yet but will.
Shame it's not entering the hillclimb tomorrow, but it'll be well sorted for the second one at the end of the summer.

Re: CG125 house special - Beer o'clock

Have spent the best part of 6 hours making the black box and doing the wiring. Jeez, that was just to provide rectified power for the horn and rear brake light on top of the CDI circuit.
I'm not too happy with the black box or it's position, but it'll do for the MOT test.
The gargantuan capacitor is in place of a battery.
It's fried my brain doing this but I've learnt alot having to work it out myself.

Re: CG125 house special - Beer o'clock

'k it

Waited for the rain to stop, wheeled it out.
Fired up after seriously denting my shin with a muther of a kick back.
And the electrics would just not work.
I think the rectifier is fried.
Ripped all the new wiring out binned the rectifier and control box.
Back to nice neat simple ignition only. :) :)

I'll MOT it with a battery horn, registration plate and a reflector, doesn't even need a speedo.
Then I'll sort a brake light after.

Re: CG125 house special - Beer o'clock

Well, pretty much ready to book a MOT next week.
Have got some great 1" closed cell foam for the seat to go on yet.
Took it for a little spin to get up through the 'box. All the gears are there.
And the brakes are dialed in now.
I didn't get it above 4000 rpm but the induction sounded sweet and it was zipping along at a fair lick.
I'm worried that it's a little loud still, but no one else seems to think so.

Re: CG125 Kung fu rat racer

Ended up making a new silencer today. Pictures tomorrow.
Sounds much quieter, a bit more back pressure too.
I added second baffle which i drilled out with 26 3mm holes to match the bore of the header, exactly.
May be fanciful on my part but I did think it felt more responsive.

On the down side the friking kick starter split.
Bloody crap metal. :(

Re: CG125 Kung fu rat racer

Hey Glenn,
Luckily no one was hurt! It's got hell of a good compression on it for a 28k engine. I think reseating the valves made a big difference. My mate felt pretty guilty when he broke it, but I said it was better that it failed now.
We'd spent the evening throwing the guts of the old meg into an argon gas canister and welding it back together. Couldn't wait for tomorrow to hear it.
I think I can still MOT it with out a kick starter so no rush to track down a Honda one.
Will let you know when the CD arrives.

I was dumpster dipping for some tubing to run my rearset mount bolts through and found an old school chair with the correct ID and OD. Result :)
So once I'd finished with the angle grinder I broke out the sawzall ;)

P1030281.jpg

It's a start anyway :D

i dig this so much!!! awsome man!!!

Re: CG125 Kung fu rat racer

I've seen kickstarts break like that. (usually Yamaha ones)
Usually caused by 'slap' starting instead of finding compression and 'pushing' over before starting. (common with people who had twostroke MX bikes)
Crap Chines metallurgy doesn't help.

Re: CG125 Kung fu rat racer

New exhaust .......... much quieter but still bassey.

Argon gas canister, cut it open, had baffles welded in.
Joined it back together, fabbed up a new bracket and had it welded on.
Should pass the noise test now. :)
