Cheap and easy faux headlight grille

Here is a quick and dirty customization that costs almost nothing. Keep in mind you need to have a headlamp with a gap between the sealed beam bulb and the retaining ring/bezel.

Step one: Get a piece of 1/2 inch welded wire mesh (sometimes called hardware cloth or rabbit fencing). You can find it cheap by the roll at just about any home improvement or garden center. You may even have some laying around. Cut a section a few inches in diameter larger than your headlight. Soak it in vinegar overnight to eat off the galvanized coating. The bottom of a 5 gallon bucket works perfect.

Step two: Using something soft like an old pillow, couch cushion, or some old blankets and gently push down on the mesh to form it into a bowl shape the same contour as your headlight bulb.

Step three: Tape the mesh to the bulb to hold in it place and start snipping off the extra mesh around the edges. Leave a few spots you can bend around the lamp to hold the mesh in place when you are done. Bend all the wire bits around the edge so everything is flush. Test fix the bulb in the retaining ring/bezel to make sure it will still fit.

Step four: Paint your "grille" whatever color you like. Once the paint cures, slip it around the bulb and reassemble everything.

The downside is you can't clean your headlamp without taking your light apart. It also doesn't actually protect your headlamp from stones. The wire mesh isn't strong enough for that. The upside is if it cost any less it would be free. In fact, I already had everything I used, so for me it actually WAS free.
