Cheapie video camera

Steve F

Been Around the Block
Picked up a pair of sunglasses on ebay with a camera mounted in the middle of the frame, not the best sunglasses by a long way but pretty handy for on bike video and easier to use than the other cheapies I tried, the glasses cost $21.87AUD. Gave them a quick test this afternoon, it was around 3:15pm and the sun was in my face for a bit of it so I imagine the picture will be better earlier in the day with the sun a bit higher. I might also try and put something over the mic to cut down on the wind noise.

Anyway, here it is. Can you pick the bit of road, not a hard one if you live in Sydney. Just love having this sort of weather in the middle of winter, 21c today :)

If you go on ebay and serach for MD80 you can find a tiny 'HD' (it is 730P) camera for only 8,- including shipments form Hong Kong!

I got two, they're really easy to use and really easy to hide on the bike wherever you want.

I have one of them (actually I have two) and no matter where I put it on the bike the old twin shakes the crap out of it and I cant get a decent picture. The only time I have is if it's mounted on my helmet so I went with these, put on and forget, they have a bigger battery as well :) If I can find somewhere on the CX that doesn't vibrate I'll mount up the MD80 copy as well :)

That's pretty decent quality for cheap recorder. I'm gonna have to look them up.

You sly dog... I saw you check out the babe walking at the :25 mark :p ;D ;D

Thanks for posting, I'm going to have to check those out before Barber.

Ok, I picked up both the sunglasses and MD80.
I'm mostly a techno-idiot, so which SD/TF card should I be looking to get? 2gb, 4gb, 8gb?

I have an 8GB micro SD card in mine and it will hold about 4 hours of video, just did 1/2hr today and it was around 1GB.

if anyone's into DIY electronic stuff, this http://www.chucklohr.com/808/ might be worth looking into.
its a keychain "spy cam" but is tiny and seems to take decent video
I just picked one up off of ebay for a little over ten bucks

Nice stuff, Steve - just hit up eBay then and mine will be on its way soon enough. Looks like a great little bit of gear - always wanted something to take video on the bike with but never wanted a tank mounted camera or anything else like that. These seem like exactly what I'm after.

As for not turning your head... shoulda given her a throttle blip and a friendly wave as you went past. Come on, think! ;D

Cheers for the link - boingk

That's really cool, but I could never take video from my sunglasses... my wife would get mad at me.

...I would've turned :)

Nice stuff redbird - don't forget to do a test run for us ;)

I just ordered an 8GB micro SD off eBay at the same time I got the glasses... waaaay cheaper than all the big chains here in town.

Ok, what the hell I'm I doing wrong?

The glasses won't do anything more than power up for 15 seconds and then shut down.
And the MD80 seems like it's recording (by what the lights are doing) but when plugged into the PC it says no pics or vids were found.
Neither device shows up through the program sent with the shipment. "Sorry, you have no video capture hardware"

Are both of these defective? Or is it just me?

Try using their USB cable in an iPod wall charger - they give a solid charge to almost anything, I use mine regularly for my GPS.

When recording, have you got the micro SD card inserted correctly? Is it set on 'lock' by accident, perhaps?

You shouldn't need the software it came with, either, just open it using 'My Computer' and check its folder for video files.

May not apply to the micro ones, but on a regular SD card there is a small switch on the side of it. One position will be indicated 'Locked', the other position is what it should be set to when inserted into a device to data can be written/modified.

Cheers - boingk
