chrome finish paint

Hi all, im thinking of painting my frame with chrome paint. From what little ive seen it looks pretty good. Anyone have any experience with this type of paint?

don't believe the shiny chrome cap on the can, its just silver paint inside

in the world of scale modelling they do have ALCAD 'chrome paint' its a very special (i.e. expensive $10 for 30ml) laquer that is air brushed over gloss black and replicates chrome beautifully, its very easy to screw up and as delicate as wet tissue paper, it rubs off with only slight finger pressure so not exactly suitable for motorcycling.

i would look for a powder coat that looks like chrome, or something that looks like nickel plating like a rickman frame.

we powder chrome all the time, however it is more like a shiney silver...here are some samples

Chrome powder is one of the most disappointing color we coaters shoot. The chrome by itself is closer than any paint can get but it requires clear coat to keep it from oxidizing and tarnishing. Clearing it dulls it by about 20% and takes all the 'pop" out of it. Duplicolor makes a spray chrome that is actually a bit brighter than clear coated chrome powder but it has no durability at all.

I am going to be using a chrome paint on one of our projects' tank & seat.
this paint is 98% the reflectivity of real chrome,
2 draw backs with this
1 its a pain in the ass to use
2 its bloody expensive
when done well it lasts & looks awesome
this is the link to it (where we get all our custom paints from can highly recommend their products)

that looks like a different process to the one i have & it cost a lot more too

I have use spectra chrome in the past, really is a great process... just a bit hard to find people that do it, i looked into adding that to our shop when we got into ceramics and Cerakote firearm coatings... but there was simply not the customer demand to justify purchase of the equiptment. there is a car out here that has been completely shot in spectra chrome... looks awesome!

I'm seriously considering chrome paint for my tank and tail section too. I'm not going to go with the expensive process and I don't expect it to look 100% like real chrome, but I'm trying to find a finish that will last and doesn't cost too much. Has anyone tried this stuff? http://www.spazstix.com/mirror-chrome/10009-ultimate-mirror-chrome-aerosol-3-5oz If you also look at their clearcoat, the say "You can also use a 2K paint to protect the Mirror Chrome for automotive applications or harsh environments.". So am I wrong to assume that I could shoot my tank with this stuff and use a good 2K clear to protect the finish and really make it shine, or am I just seeing what I want to see?

i can't imagine that this stuff will be durable at all. it's made for plastic RC cars. It's also $12 for 3oz, so you'll spend $50-60 on enough paint to cover your tank and tail. For $60 just the paint, not the clear or primer or base coat (most chrome paints go on over solid black) i would be very hesitant. I guess it's worth a shot. Paint something small, do a complete finish out on it. Then pour gasoline all over it and drop it on the ground. Post a photo of what it looks like after that.

althought i see where you are coming from about price... i have to say, i used to run RC and the paint they sold for the body's was VERY tough... and why would you pour gas all over it and drop it on the ground? do you do that to your bike? I would think that this paint would be awesome, the only thing i worry about is that the clear will knock it down a bit... if you use a 2 stage clear (even the rattle can 2k) that will seal in that paint and you can pour gas all over it and drop it on the ground hahaha. but he is 100% spot on with pricec, about $75 or so... but when you figure what it would cost you to get regular paint, even single stage Dupont, with activator and hardener, possibly flex for the tail section you will easy be over $200 when you add the pint of clear you will need as well. Personally i think if you can get the materials to paint a bike under $150 that is a steal! i would be all over it. I would imagine with primer, sanding materials, prep, glaze, paint, clear, tack, and even finishing materials you would be right around that $150 marker... for a custom one off paint job, that would be worth every penny!

:) i get what your saying though i think everyone has pulled the gas nozel out a bit fast or had it burst on them and put gas all over their tank... i know i have had my sprint into the station for water on some past custom paint jobs, even with clear i have seen it fog... a buddy of mine has a $3500 paint job he uses some type of fill guard that goes inside his tank opening and the nozzle fits into that. prevents shit like that from happening

i come from the world of painting vintage vespas, where there is a lot of body paneling that moves, and tends to get banged up.

The chrome paint i will be using has to have a single pack lacquer on first to prevent it taking the edgae off the chromes reflectiveness & the a 2k clear over that to make it fuel resistant

& the price of paint (good paint) keeps going up - i would be very happy if i only paid $150 for materials for a paint job on one of our bikes & we buy the basics like primer, thinners, lacquer, panel wipe etc in bulk

Jsharp you really should look into adding some flex into your paint. works great for that type of application. i do it any time i shoot plastics, such as a sport bike woul dhave

A buddy of mine used to do it but I believe he has abandoned it now....
You can try contacting him though, I'm sure he can help with info at the very least.

This stuff does look like real chrome though... Here's his website.

This is an email I got back from Spaz Stix after asking for confirmation that their chrome paint will work with 2K primer and clear.

"The finish of the surface to be painted chrome must be basically a finished high gloss black surface. Any imperfections will show. Once the chrome is applied you can clear coat it, but you need to make sure your using a low to no etch clear coat or the chrome finish will turn something more resembling aluminum."

I'm going to buy a can and do a test on metal with 2K myself and see what it comes out like before I do the tank. I've read that you really need to follow every instruction carefully or else it won't come out properly. I'll make a thread on my findings when the time comes.

If you have low expectations, the Chrome paint has merit though..My carburetor top came out reasonable. Not chrome, but looks like shiny metal, not like metal flake silver. I will be painting both carb tops with it... I might add some clearcoat to see if it shines a little better. I have the before and after in my build thread.
