CJ360 - Motor not turning past 360°

eram

Been Around the Block
So I went to set the timing after wiring up my project, and turning the alternator will not pass a certain random point in the rotation. I It's almost like there was something stuck between the gears and it just "clunks" to an abrupt halt...It does *not* get stuck -- I can turn it freely clockwise and back to that clunk at the same point in the rotation. The stopping is similar to trying to turn the rear wheel when in gear...

I'm pretty sure it's a point almost exactly 360 degrees that it won't pass.

I pulled off the right crankcase to see if a washer or something jiggled loose and got caught in the gears but nothing.

It sounds like the "clunk" is coming from the head, but I don't have the patience to pull that tonight (my least fav routine)...and I think I'm afraid it's a bent valve for some reason...

More info:
Fresh rebuild, bore/hone/etc but fired up and idled on one cylinder a couple days ago (I suspect electrical on that side, motor turned fine) - timing was set before starting it.
Since I shut it down last, I installed the chain and sprockets and did other non-motor related stuffs
Rear wheel moves freely in neutral, will not in gear

Thanks :(

So I popped the head cover off and it turns beautifully...is there some reason that the cam would now be hitting the cover to not let it turn when torqued or something?

I don't really want to bolt it back on without making sure something major isn't wrong or that it's not going to happen next time I'm on the road...

Sounds like your cam timing is off or heaven forbid you have a stuck valve. While you have it off stand in on the exhaust ports and pour some acetone or gas into the intake ports and see if the leak. Flip it over do the exhaust side to. That's an easy way to see if you bent valves enough for them not to seal, they will leak around the edges of the valves in the combustion chamber.

I re-checked the cam alignment and it was off! Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I haven't put it back together yet so can't confirm the fix, but it was far enough off that I'm sure it was it...now to do the leakdown :3

you should check your valve situation if you have the motor apart, do a leak test on the valve seats and make sure nothing was or harmed by your mis alignment / collision
