CL175 Exhaust and Carb Tuning

Hey guys, I've been reading this forum on occasion for some time now but this is my first time posting. First, a little introduction to my project. I picked up a 73 CL175 at a swap meet last fall, running but in rather ugly shape. Over this winter I stripped it to bare frame and repainted most of the components. Its hardly a perfect resto, my goal is just to have a decent looking bike that is above all functional and I'm not afraid to ride where and how I want to. In the long run, I'd like to go in more of a scrambler-ey direction, though its already got the high pipes and fork gaitors, being a CL. I've also added some Shinko 244 dual sport tires.

Anyways, here's my issue. I decided to hack the stock muffler off when installing the exhaust since 1) I think it's ugly and 2) it had some rust holes and the baffles seemed to have come loose and were rattling around inside. Yesterday I took it for its first ride since getting it back together (just up and down my parent's driveway, since I'm still waiting for my registration to come in) and its running like shit, which is to be expected I suppose. It doesn't have any power when put under the least bit of load, and seemed to be running very hot (lean?), as the headers became noticeably discolored.

So clearly it needs some backpressure in the exhaust, and possibly some carb work as well. I've seen people add VW exhaust tips to these, various internal baffles, ect. I'm just wondering what is gonna be best for overall rideability and smooth power delivery. Any direction on an exhaust solution and carb tuning would be helpfull. I'm still running stock airboxes btw.

The engines on these air cooled bikes run hot so don't asume its the jetting. I have a cb175 with pods and pretty much open cl pipes (vw tips w/ baffle) and it ran fine stock. Actually better than after jetting but thats another story.

Hey could tell me more about the "vw tips w/ baffle" you mentioned?

I just did the same thing as the OP would like quite things down a bit.

Look just like these.

My headers are off a 200 but I think they are the same size as a 175. They tips have the same exact outside diameter as the header so I bought a piece of exhaust pipe with same ID as the header OD cut a couple of sleeves and had them welded. The difference is not huge but its noticeable.

Just an update on my situation...

I ordered some of those baffled VW tips which immediately made a huge difference in rideability as well as noise. It's still quite loud, but it's not completely obnoxious like before and is quite bearable with a helmet on.

In terms of the tuning, so far I've gone up one position on the needle, which is now raised to the highest position. It's become apparent as well that these must not be the original carbs, as the tops have a 20 stamped on them leading me to believe that they must be the 20mm cb carbs rather than the 22mm cl ones. The jetting right now is 92 on the mains, 35 on the slows. The bike idles well, but if I'm giving about quarter throttle at like 3-4k and crack it al the way open it hesitates quite a bit until it gets to maybe 7k then pulls well, though I think the top end could be better as well. I checked the timing and spark advancer on Saturday and all was well there, just to isolate the issue.

Gonna order some different main jets this morning and see how that goes.
