I had my shifter off to access the engine panels and went to reattach it. I overtorqued the nut that holds on the shifter arm
and the whole threaded part snapped right off.
It is the threaded part of #11 . I am at a loss to figure out how to fix it. HELP!!
I actually have one. I just can't get the old part off.
In order to remove the part from the bike, I need to take off #18. I almost popped a blood vessel trying to loosen it with my socket. I finally got it
to move with tremendous effort ... only to discover that it is attached to a bolt that runs through the swing arm and that it was rotating in place!
The only way it will come off is with a 23mm wrench held on one side of the bike and a 23mm socket to remove the nut. Besides, even if I can get it
off, I am not sure if it can be reattached with the same nut. The ends of #18 are bent in and wrapped around the thread of the bolt through the swingarm.
By the looks of it, it is a one-time-use type of locknut. When the bike is running I will maybe take it in somewhere to have it done. I need to reattach the shifter arm to get the bike anywhere.
Alex, I might not be understanding the problem correctly. But why not just put the new plate on, then the castle nut (part #18) with some blue loctite? Then just order a new castle nut at your convenience.
I can't get the nut off by myself. I will have to get another 23mm wrench and someone to help me. The castle nut just rotates because the entire swingarm bolt is turning with just one wrench on it.
I will have to try and find a new castle nut too. This one is kinda chewed up now. The ends of the nut are bent in to wrap around the nipple #27
The swingarm bolt is meant to be removable. Someone unfortunately completely buggered yours, and chances are it hasn't been greased in years. Now's a good time to get a replacement shaft off the internet, as well as some new bronze bushings for your swingarm to replace whats in there, and just do an overhaul. If its on their that tight and it's that mucked up, I wouldn't even bother with it and would just cut it off. They are plentiful enough that you shouldn't have to worry to much about finding another in good condition.
I wish you luck. Do a search on replacing swingarm bushings.
I got a spare nut! A dealer in town actually had one in their old stock! I love going to a dealer that has been in business since the 60s. Turns out they
have a whole bunch of old stuff. Woo
I soaked it up in penetrating oil and am letting it soak overnight. Tomorrow I will try again with my new breaker bar.
You might try heating the nut with a torch abut be very careful. I would guess that the penetrating fluid you put on is flammable. Letting it sit overnight might let enough of it evaporate or a small burn/explosion instead of a big one.
If you need more parts, let me know, I have a 71CL350 parts bike. I needed a couple parts to go on my 72CL450 and have them. There may be some other parts I need off of it but that might have to wait for spring.
