CL360 Stator testing.

I recently picked up a '75 cl360 and am having charging problems. wondering if anyone out there knows the best way to test the stator? I have it out right now and cannot find anything on what kind of ohm reading i should be getting. And I wasn't showing any voltage output when it was in and running. I just don't want to have to order one if I don't need to. Thanks.

It wasnt putting out any voltage? Check all the wires and connections.

I could be wrong, but I dont think stators go bad, do they? Unless there's some sort of physical damage.

How are you testing it?
You should have continuity (0.5~2.0 ohms) between any pair of output leads (yellow, pink, white) and open circuit to ground (stator body)
The green with red tracer is for neutral switch

yeah weird right NO voltage whatsoever coming out of the stator. pulled it out every thing looks fine wasn't grounding out anywhere. checked the continuity and was reading between .9 and 1.3 ohms between all 3. So I cleaned it and scuffed up the brushes and put it back together and still nothing. but while i was testing continuity and voltage between various wires i found that the yellow wire (headlight switched??) to the recifier has continuity with ground. So I'm thinking next step is to go through all the wiring and try and find the short??? Oooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. gut all the old wiring and start fresh?

Brushes?
What brushes?
The only brushes are in starter motor
CL is same generator as CB, permanent magnet.
Disconnect block connector and check AC output between pairs of leads with engine running.
It will be somewhere around 10~30 V at idle and 60~80V (or more) @ 5,000rpm

It's easier to test when it's in the bike. If it's blown, you can sometimes tell with stators because some of the wiring will be black, or fried. If you take it to an alternator shop they might be able to test it for you.

Sorry not the brushes, I cleaned and scuffed the magnet connection surface whatever its called. I got it back in started it and I have no voltage whatsoever from the block connector at most it was .07 v ac between the leads and no difference with rpm increase. And i checked all the wiring and everything looks fine nothing burnt or suspicious.

Well not sure what was going on but now i'm showing ac voltage out of the stator. disconnected the rectifier and its FRIED! ground wires completely melted looks like its been that way for a long time. and disconnected I have continuity from ground(green) to the pink and yellow wires in the rectifier. So that tells me its grounding internally? right? I read somewhere that you can get one from radio shack? anyone know what the part number is or if i can even do that?

I think weak charging is a typical 360 issue. Mine was charging poorly also until I rewired the bike.

You probably had a bad connection the first time you tested.
It's usually best to make some jumper leads with spade connectors that plug into block

You did forward/reverse bias the rectifier test?
the diodes will 'flow' in one direction and 'block in the other direction
Connect black lead from tester to green wire, then repeat tests with red lead from meter on green wire.
The rectifiers usually have the red wire damaged but if regulator is faulty it could damage a bunch of things.
BTW, what AC voltage did you get at different RPM's?

Well I went and bought the little $3 recifier from radio shack and got it installed and its charging... kinda... barely 13v at about 3k but hey I can ride it now. I was showing around 29 vac at idle and 50 something revving it up. So I think I'm alright for a little while. I found a simplified wiring diagram so I think thats the next step But I'm gonna enjoy it while the weathers still decent here in utah. Ran like dog sh*t when I got it to charge but I just tuned it up and went through and cleaned 10 pounds of gunk out of the carbs now she runs like a little raped ape! Thanks for the help man. You guys and this site are AWESOME!! Here's a pic of the lil bastard you just helped me resurrect..
just got done with most of the fab work here. I'll have to get some recent pics.
