CL360 Stock Carb Tuning

Question for you pros out there. I just rebuilt my CL360 Keihin stock carbs with a standard rebuild kit. It came with 35, 68, 68 jets (this is what the book says is standard).

I am a novice when it comes to engines, so take that for what it is worth.

I am currently running stock exhaust and airbox. The bike will only run well with the choke fully open. I get what I think is decent power, and everything seems normal. But closing the choke (so the leaver pointing down) makes the bike have next to no power (if cold the engine dies).

Help!

If you know of any great tuning instructional videos or resources please pass them along with your wisdom.

Lever all the way up is CLOSED lever down is OPEN, sounds like you are having issues with mixture. That MAIN 68 is debated and I personally have 2 sets of carbs that have 100's in them. The manuals say either or but from my experince thus far they need about 100-110. CL's I have read are supposed to have 110's so you are running VERY lean.

Your right about the choke. It is open, all the way, and that is when it runs fine. So I think I was confused about which was open and which was closed. I've confirmed that I have the buttery valve is open when running well (which means the choke is off).

I put in 100's and played with the idle mixture screw a bit, and all is well. With the choke valve open completely I am doing around 60 mph at 5.5k RPM. So I think it is where I need it to be. Thanks for the feedback.

I am about to order some carb rebuild kits for my 1975 CL360. I have read about the debate (68/68 or 68/110) jet size. Seems you have confirmed the way I was leaning (68/110). Can you tell me if/where you found rebuilt kits with the 110 jet included?

Thanks and glad you cleared up you issue.

IF the jets are OK and factory and you plan on leaving the bike more or less stock with factory intake and exhaust then just clean them. Piano wire or guitar strings will do a good job of cleaning holes out if you are GENTLE. There is no real reason to change a jet unless it is beat all to hell or you can't get it clean.

I buy parts at two places for that type of stuff.

Here's jets are us's list for the 360

And z1 Enterprises, they have all sorts of good stuff

And of course you can click on the Dime City Cycles banner above and check their stuff out, I like what they have they just charge out the ass for shipping so make it a big buy.

The bike came with different exhaust on it - and I'm not sure that I will find stock one for cheap (although i would love to, LOVE that look!). I plan on eventually getting the thing going with pods/velocity stacks, so i am sure that it will take some monkeying around to get it straight.

Thanks for the links, I have checked out jets-r-us several times for my 550K, but they do not carry the original Keihin slow jets I have needed, so I never purchased there before. For this bike, I am more open to aftermarket parts, since I would not mind starting fresh, if/when they will need rejetting anyway. These carbs look like they could use it!

I'd love to reuse the jets I have though, if they work size wise, because they look fairly decent. But I just pulled them today, and put them to soak, and have not checked the sizes. Not sure about the float needles though, since they are different than anything I have dealt with (small spring type thing that makes the needle move with the float???).

IF there is NO other reason to get the kits than DO it for those damn needles. The springs wear out in them and that makes setting the float height tricky because they will not close correctly. I fought my bike for a month before I figured that out.

Gottcha. So jets-r-us has the kits as a whole? I'm down for a total rebuild, the PO seemed to think that routine maintenance was allowing spiders to build high-rent condos all over the bike...

Yes, all three of the stores I listed have them, can sometimes find them on eBay as well.

Sorry to be a PITA, but I'm not seeing them for the CL360 on either jets-r-us or Z1. Is there a different model that uses the same rebuild kit? The ones I have are model 747A. I emailed jets-r-us to check that maybe they don't have them listed as a kit.

Thanks

Ok I have a set each of 754A and 754B carbs, I know the only MAJOR difference between them is the air jets under the diaphragm, on has screw in the other presses in. Other than that the carbs are identical. Which means that a kit for a CB will work for both.

Are you sure you have 747A? carbs

That's definitely what it said on the sides (little plate facing directly left and right on the lower body). Is there another place another number is listed?

Just got an email back from mike at Jets-R-Us saying he doesn't carry the kits for this carb model. Bummer. I'll email Z1 - since I didn't see any carb parts in the section under carbs at all.

Thanks for all your help.

Quick question for the experts: I have found some NOS gasket sets (no jets) for my CL360, and some K&L sets that include the jets. Wondering if anyone would suggest going one way or another, based on quality of the K&L. If I am going to run into issues with them, I'd rather get the NOS sets, knowing they are correct, and hope to find new float needles.

Any and all help appreciated.

Scott
