Cleaning chain

I took off my drive chain and the service manual says to soak it in hot oil for a few minutes. I don't want to use any of any of my cooking pots to cook motor oil in, let alone put dirty motorcycle parts in them. Is there something else other than hot oil I can soak it in to clean it?

Cooking your chain in oil will clean your chain quite well. It will also leave it well lubricated inside all of the pins and plates. It will also leave your rear wheel, tire, and whole rear end of the bike well lubricated once you ride it! Naptha ( Coleman lantern fuel) works very well for cleaning the chain, and is what many O, and X ring chain manufactures recommend for cleaning.

grab a bunch of the disposable metal tins used to cook turkeys and other things in...

i use them for everything from oil changes to holding parts.

when your done, just throw em out, or better yet, reuse them.

plus they are super cheap and pretty sturdy
