Clear finish over bare metal

I am planning to "refinish" a large portion of my bike by stripping all finishes. I have been doing considerable research on this topic, and found largely conflicting information for the best way to achieve this without major corrosion issues. So far I have looked into Permalac, Penetrol, POR-15, and spray urethane. I have also seen some anecdotes about simply leaving the metal unfinished and periodically rubbing the metal with chain lube or penetrating oil.

Any thoughts? I would really like to hear from somebody who has actually done this, and observed long-term durability of their chosen finish. My thanks in advance.

Powder coating is the most durable finish. Sandblast a frame and have it clear powder coated looks awesome.

I have heard powdercoating is the best option; I was hoping for something DIY.

And thanks, but I am not really inviting commentaries on the aesthetics of the procedure. I think glossy paint and chrome looks shitty, so I just want it to look like what it is; a bunch of steel.

I've looked into this also and even went so far as to pick up the POR-15 product but at that point I had stripped my tank and just kept rubbing it with old motor oil every week (with a Scotch Brite attack here and there). Great for a tank, but if it was a frame or something else it'd be hard to get it all covered.

This is my tank after I've been using oil on it for 6 months (the little orange specks on it aren't rust - something that's floating off the trees around here).

cleeuw, that tank looks good after 6 months!

NoneMoreBlack, if you really wanna go trick, use DuPont satin clear. The protection of a clear coat without the shine.

if it is raw metal and nothing else powder ist he only way we have a powder formulated for this application. if you scuff the tank or somethign along those lines you can pull off a clear like engine clear, but then it has to be baked to get the look and durrability

If you do it, make sure the finish is 100% exactly how you want it before starting, nicely polished, no rust, or however it is you want it, and then make sure the clear coat seals absolutely 100%.

If it doesn't seal completely, it will oxidise... you'll have to remove the clear coat and start again...

I was intending to clear coat my case covers after polishing and got the POR 15 Glisten PC to do so, but then realised how hard it would be to ensure it's all sealed, and instead I'm finding just a go over once in a while with Mothers is enough to keep them nice and shiny :)

O.k., if it's steel (I thought of aluminum) you have no choice...
But it'll always look different than "bare"...

Best regards

A good product for clear finishing bare steel is Ankor Wax from Morris Lubricants - hot-rodders use it to protect car bodies left unpainted.
